The American is on a 9-match unbeaten run.
American No. 1 Taylor Fritz entered his maiden semifinal at the Championships by storming past Karen Khachanov 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-6(4) in the Wimbledon 2025 quarterfinal on Tuesday. It was a compact masterclass from the 5th seed, who looked like an immovable force throughout his 2 hour 36 minute victory. Fritz awaits the winner of Carlos Alcaraz vs Cameron Norrie in the final four.
Since the beginning of the Wimbledon Championships, Fritz has been solid from the back of the court. The former US Open runner-up had the best winner/unforced error ratio among the remaining men’s singles competitors – and justified it on Court-1. A former World No. 4, Fritz came into Wimbledon in immaculate form – winning grass court titles in Stuttgart as well as Eastbourne.

Fritz opened his account by breaking Khachanov in his very first service game to go up 2-0. The American threw in some drop shots very early on, giving his Russian counterpart some things to think about. The 29-year-old Tokyo Olympics silver medalist had no answers to the Fritz serve – failing to notch a single break point in the opening two sets. Meanwhile, a single break of serve was enough for the World No. 5 to race ahead 6-3 6-4.
Whenever he was under pressure, Fritz found an ace or forehand to escape trouble. However, Khachanov pounced on a slight dip in concentration from the 27-year-old California resident to go up 4-0 in the third set. All of a sudden, Fritz had lost the speed and accuracy on his serve, and the ball toss became a nagging issue. Khachanov, a former Top-10 player himself, began finding the depth he needed to halve his deficit within no time.

Before the start of the fourth set, Fritz called a doctor for an apparent niggle in his leg. It showed in the initial stages, as he went down 0-2 and continued to concede momentum. But as all great players do, the American regained focus and broke right back to level proceedings. Despite some pressure from Fritz, Khachanov managed to drag the fourth set into a tiebreak. In the end, Fritz held his nerve for a strong victory.
“He definitely started playing better [in the third set] but I gave him a lot of hope,” said Fritz in the post-match interview. “I’ve never really had a match change so drastically where I felt so in control – playing great, serving great, never really felt like my serve was in danger. Then out of nowhere, I started making a ton of mistakes.”
He continued, “It’s an amazing feeling [reaching the semis]. Having played the quarterfinals here twice, and lost in five sets twice, I don’t think I could’ve taken another one. So I’m really happy that I’m going to get to play the semis here.”
Fritz is currently on a nine match winning streak on grass, and leads the tour when it comes to wins on this surface in 2025. He awaits the winner of Alcaraz vs Norrie later on Tuesday.
