Aryna Sabalenka Smashes Through Laura Siegemund’s Slice Masterclass to Reach Wimbledon 2025 Semifinals

Sabalenka overcame Laura Siegemund’s dropshot wizardry to reach her 12th Slam semifinal.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka came back from a set down to defeat Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and book her place in the Wimbledon 2025 semifinals on Tuesday. The Belarusian, now into her 12th Grand Slam semifinal, overcame a relentless slice-and-dropshot strategy from the German veteran, eventually outlasting her in a two-hour, 54-minute tussle on Centre Court.

Sabalenka Powers Through Siegemund’s Drop Shots

Siegemund, bidding for her first-ever win over a world No. 1, started brilliantly, pulling Sabalenka into uncomfortable territory with her finesse-driven grass-court play. Using dropshots to lethal effect and reading the pacey Belarusian better with every point. Siegemund claimed the first set 6-4, winning a sharp 75% of her break points.

Sabalenka, who struggled with double faults early, steadied in the second. Her forehand began firing, and despite the slice-heavy resistance, she broke early and cruised to a 6-2 set, winning 68% of her return points in the process. Her sheer power helped mask a few stumbles. She hit 8 forehand winners and edged ahead as the rallies grew longer.

The deciding set showcased both players at their tactical extremes. Sabalenka switched rackets early on and looked increasingly frustrated as Siegemund continued with her clever variety. Down 1-3 at one stage, Sabalenka clawed back with deeper returns and found her rhythm again. She struck her first ace at 4-4, then held serve with authority to take a 5-4 lead.

At match point, leading 40-15, Sabalenka saw Siegemund save one with a stylish dropshot, the kind that had troubled her all day. But on the next rally, Siegemund sent the ball long, giving Sabalenka her spot in the final four.

Sabalenka vs. Siegemund – Key Stats

Statistically, the match reflected their stark contrast. Sabalenka won 81% of her service games in the tournament before today but managed just 60% in this one. She went 0/6 on net points in the final set, while Siegemund won half of hers (3/6). The German also made fewer unforced errors, 8 to Sabalenka’s 14 in the decider.

As the commentators noted, Sabalenka’s blend of aces, raw power, and emotional fire is reminiscent of Serena Williams. But today, it was the mental grind and problem-solving that saw her through a match full of “dark arts on grass,” as one voice in the booth joked.

Siegemund exits with her head held high, while Sabalenka powers into yet another Grand Slam semifinal. Her sheer power is anger-fueled, rather similar to the Marvel character Hulk. The angrier, the better.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
