Redemption Day for Williams F1- Alex Albon Finishes Top 5, Sainz Crashes Out on Debut!

Rohan Singh

An in-depth analysis of Williams's first race in 2025.

Williams F1 team is recognised as a back-marker team occasionally competing in the midfield. It is one of the oldest teams of the Formula 1 grid. Williams started off as a competitive team and was among the formidable champions of the sport in the 90s. It hosted drivers like Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell and many more Formula 1 champions. The past few years have been shaky for Williams. They are facing a severe drop in performance in the recent seasons of Formula 1. The team was also suffering with the lack of a good second driver.

Williams made some significant changes ahead of the 2025 season. They are hoping to produce better results under the leadership of James Vowles. They have one of the strongest driver lineups in the 2025 Formula 1 grid with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz. The team started off the Australian Grand Prix on a positive note. Both of their drivers manage to qualify in the top-10 and started the race with hopes of scoring points finish. So how was Williams F1’s first outing in 2025. Let’s have a look at Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz’s race day.

El Matador Suffers Early Failure

Carlos Sainz’s decision to join the ninth team on the Formula 1 grid was met with a lot uproar. He was a succesful driver in his Ferrari tenure and was able to win races and collect podiums regularly. Compared to that, Williams F1 was struggling for points in the 2024 season. Carlos Sainz was determined to prove critics wrong. He was ready to bring changes in results for his new team. Sainz’s pace during the free practice was only a trailer of Williams performance in the Australian Grand Prix.

The Smooth Operator started the Australian Grand Prix with a lot of hope. He was able to win the race with Ferrari in the previous season, immediately after an operation. But, disaster struck Sainz and Williams even before the race could properly start. He crashed out in lap one. Sainz lost the rear end of his car at the final lap and sent his car into the wall, ending his race then and there.

He was visibly dejected in the post race interview. Experts suggest that Sainz was unable to understand his car properly. Vowles has clarified that Sainz suffered from a power surge, which gave him extra torque during the corner. This sudden power surge is what stopped Williams, from a what could’ve been a double points finish.

Albono Jumpstarts Season for Williams F1

Alex Albon handled the car almost perfectly throughout the race as he navigated his way to fifth position in the race. He was able to defend from a considerably faster Ferrari, with Hamilton behind the wheel. Albon had qualified in P6 during the Qualifying. He exclaimed that his car felt completely different from the previous year during an interview with Formula 1.

Albon’s newfound confidence helped bring 10 points home for Williams. The team was impressed with his results. He has been proving himself as the go to driver for Williams for the past few years. He has been a reliable point scorer in the car which was unable to compete in the midfield for majority of the season.

Alex Albon was initally promoted to P4 due to Kimi Antonelli’s penalty. However, he lost his position to Antonelli again after the penalty reversal. In spite of early success, Albon has kept his expectations realistic. “It’s all to play for. Realistically, we’re fighting for the P9/P10s every race, so points like today mean a lot. I’m interested to see how the season plays out. I think that it’s not very clear still who’s going to pip who in the midfield“, said Albon in post-race interview.

Cherry on the Cake For James Vowles

Additonally, Williams F1 have found themselves another positive factor with their new driver. Carlos Sainz is known for making some incredible strategy calls. In his Ferrari era, Sainz was able to claim podiums and even overturn race results with his choices. Sainz has carried over his X-factor to Williams. He may not have scored points in the race. But, Sainz helped out Williams in the pits helping them maximise the points with Alex Albon. In the wet-dry-wet encounter at the Australian Grand Prix, Sainz asked Williams to switch to Intermediate tyres during the transition period.

James Vowles, Williams’s team principal, praised Sainz for his quick witted decisions. He effectively called Sainz an extra strategist who helped them with his incredible insight.

We saw other teams not sure, ‘Do we try and hang it out, can we try and hang it out?’, and Carlos was adamant, ‘You won’t survive on that through the last few corners’. He was spot on, and helped drive us towards that.

James Vowles has placed his confidence on his drivers calling them the leaders who will drive Williams F1 forward.

Williams is off to a great start with their two drivers. Is it only a matter of time, before they become a competitive midfield car occasionally fighting for podiums? Or will they end up disappearing after creating a hype like Aston Martin did in 2022?
