Tre Johnson
Tre Johnson, whose full name is Richard Earl Johnson III, was born on March 7, 2006, in Dallas, Texas. He is often called “Tre” because he is the third Richard Johnson in his family. His father, Richard Johnson Jr., also played basketball at Baylor (1995-97) before transferring to Midwestern State. Tre is the oldest of three children and has two younger brothers, Royce Johnson and Jamari Riley. He wears jersey number 20 in honor of his father, who wore the same number during his career. Johnson’s college major was in Physical Education and Sports.
Johnson grew up in Dallas, Texas, and attended Lake Highlands High School. During his sophomore year, he averaged 23.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. In his junior year, he participated in the City of Palms Tournament, where he averaged 23 points per game. He later transferred to Link Academy in Branson, Missouri, for his senior year. Johnson was a highly sought-after recruit, considered a consensus five-star recruit and ranked as the 5th best national player in the class of 2024 by 247 Sports Composite, ESPN, and Rivals. He earned several awards during his high school career, including being a McDonald’s All-American (2024), Jordan Brand Classic (2024), Nike Hoop Summit (2024), and Texas Mr. Basketball (2023).
For his collegiate career, Tre Johnson played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns during the 2024-2025 season. As a freshman, he made a significant impact, leading the entire SEC in scoring with 19.9 points per game. He also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. His impressive performance earned him the SEC Freshman of the Year award in 2025 and a spot on the Second Team All-SEC. During the 2024-25 season, he played in 33 games, with a field goal percentage of .427, a three-point percentage of .397, and a free throw percentage of .871. He accumulated a total of 658 points in his collegiate career with the Longhorns.
Tre Johnson’s strong collegiate performance led him to be a highly anticipated prospect in the NBA draft. He was selected with the sixth overall pick by the Washington Wizards in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft. He officially joined the Washington Wizards for the 2025-present career.
In recent news, on October 14, 2025, Johnson is already making an impact in the NBA preseason. He scored 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3Pt) and three assists in 14 minutes during the Wizards’ 120-103 preseason victory over the Knicks. He plays as a shooting guard for the Washington Wizards.
