The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ midseason collapse forced quick action. On Tuesday, the 6-6 franchise waived cornerback Darius Slay in a mutual split after less than one full season. By Wednesday afternoon, the Buffalo Bills had already claimed the six-time Pro Bowler off waivers, turning Pittsburgh’s roster move into an instant gift for a Super Bowl contender.
Buffalo, sitting at 8-4, and owning the league’s No.2 pass defense, beat out the Philadelphia Eagles and others on the waiver wire. Slay, 34, brings championship experience from the 2022 Eagles and instant depth behind starters Christian Benford and Tre’Davious White. He started nine games for Pittsburgh but hadn’t played since a Nov. 9 concussion and was a healthy scratch in Sunday’s loss to ironically, the bills.
Meanwhile, the Steelers elevated Asante Samuel Jr. from the practice squad to replace him and also claimed veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers from Minnesota, hoping the 35-year-old can spark Aaron Rodgers and a passing attack ranked 24th in the league.
Pittsburgh’s defense has crumbled, surrendering second-half leads repeatedly and now ranking 20th in points allowed. After the latest blowout loss to Buffalo, “Fire Tomlin!” chants echoed through Acrisure Stadium. Mike Tomlin, the NFL’s longest-tenured head coach since 2007, responded calmly, “When you’re not winning, it’s not entertaining. I respect it, I share their frustrations.”
Tomlin’s remarkable 18-year run of non-losing seasons is suddenly in danger. The Steelers must win at least three of their final five games- starting with a critical trip to Baltimore- to keep the streak alive. Cutting Slay and grabbing Thielen are clear panic moves for a team desperate to salvage a playoff spot.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
