Lions ease to big win over Cowboys to kick things of in Week 14!
A massive game in the context of making the playoffs, Thursday Night Football’s (TNF) prime-time slot featured the Lions vs Cowboys in an all-NFC battle. As things stood, the 7-5 Lions took on the 6-5-1 Cowboys, with a win boosting their chances massively.
It was an exciting contest as both teams put up plenty of points. The final score went in favor of the Lions, who won 44-30, with the loss putting the Cowboys’ season in serious jeopardy.

Down 10-6, the Cowboys faced a long 3rd and 21 near midfield. Dak Prescott got the ball to tight end Jake Fergusson, and just as he was being tackled, Jack Campbell punched the ball out.
The loose ball was recovered by Brian Branch, and the Lions wasted no time in capitalising on the turnover. After a few plays, David Montgomery broke through the middle for a 35-yard touchdown run.
And if that was not enough, Dallas shot themselves in the foot once again in the opening drive of the second half. Prescott’s pass intended for George Pickens was deflected into the hands of Derrick Barnes, who returned it to the Cowboys’ 14-yard line. Detroit capitalized once again through an Isaac TeSlaa 12–yard receiving touchdown to go up 27-9.

CeeDee Lamb was the biggest threat to the Lions’ defense until the third quarter when he suffered a concussion. Lamb went up to grab a tough catch in the endzone with Dallas down 27-9.
Despite his valiant effort, Lamb was unable to come down with the difficult one-handed catch; however, he fell with all his weight and momentum, landing hard on his head. The Cowboys receiver was then assisted off the field and made his way to the locker room, following which he was declared to be out for the game.
Prior to his concussion, Lamb was having another impactful game. He finished with 6 catches from 8 targets for 121 yards before his night came to a premature end. In spite of fighting tooth and nail till the end, there is no question that Dallas missed their best receiver for the rest of the game.

In spite of the fact that Prescott carved up the Lions’ secondary for nearly 400 passing yards, the Lions’ defense had many moments that forced Prescott under pressure and led to turnovers.
Al-Quadin Muhammad led the way with 3 sacks as Prescott was taken down a total of 5 times, while being pressured consistently. That pressure also led to two interceptions by Prescott, one of which led to an easy touchdown, while the other one killed the game late in the fourth quarter.
While the Cowboys’ defense managed to keep Jahmyr Gibbs relatively quiet on the ground, they were unable to contain him in the pass game. After a 107-yard receiving game against the Eagles a few weeks ago, Gibbs showed once again why he is a true dual-threat running back.
Gibbs had 12 carries, resulting in just 43 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, but he finished with 7 catches from 7 targets for 77 yards, making a huge impact in the Lions’ pass game.

It was a quarterback duel worth watching as Jared Goff and Dak Prescott combined for nearly 700 passing yards. Goff threw 34 times, completing 25 passes for 309 yards as he carved up the Lions’ secondary.
On the other hand, despite going up against a tough defense, Prescott also had a big game, completing 31 of 45 pass attempts for 376 yards. Both teams had more success through the air in this game, as the run game produced exactly 200 combined yards.
Overall, the TNF game between the Lions and Cowboys finished with a combined 74 points, over 600 passing yards, and 200 rushing yards. Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown had 96 and 92 receiving yards, respectively, for the Lions.
On the other hand, Ryan Flournoy stepped up for the injured Lamb, finishing with 9 receptions for 115 yards. George Pickens had a rather subdued game with just 5 catches for 37 yards.
| Detroit Lions | Category | Dallas Cowboys |
|---|---|---|
| 408 | Total yards | 417 |
| 299 | Passing yards | 326 |
| 109 | Rushing yards | 91 |
| 1 | Sacks allowed | 5 |
| 2 | Punts | 1 |
| 8 (50) | Penalties (yards) | 7 (76) |
| 0 | Fumbles lost | 1 |
| 0 | Interceptions | 2 |
The crucial win for the Lions means they remain in contention for a spot in the playoffs. Detroit now moves to 8-5, and will face another tough test next week against the Los Angeles Rams.
As for Dallas, the loss sends them to 6-6-1, and they now need plenty to go in their favor if they are to make the playoffs. Up next for the Cowboys are the Minnesota Vikings in Week 15.
