Can the Denver Broncos Sustain Their Winning Run after a String of Low Margin Victories?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Are the Denver Broncos the new Chiefs in winning close games?

The 27-26 win against the Washington Commanders was the tenth straight win for the Denver Broncos this season. With a 10-2 overall record through 13 weeks, the Broncos not only top the AFC West, but are right on the heels of the New England Patriots, who currently hold the number one spot in the AFC.

But, despite all these victories, some questions have started to come up regarding the manner in which the Broncos have been able to pull off their 10 straight wins. Let us take a deeper look into how Denver has reached this stage and how meaningful their wins have been.

Broncos Have Won 4 Consecutive Games

As impressive as the Broncos’ record is, their Week 13 win against the Commanders was also the fourth straight game in which the Broncos won by a margin of 3 points or less. It is a known fact that Denver has one of the top defenses in the league, led by players such as Nik Bonitto, Zach Allen, Pat Surtain, and more. This defense has held teams to just over 18 points per game.

On the other side, the offense hasn’t been firing on all cylinders, but what they have managed to do is come through when it matters the most. The same holds true of quarterback Bo Nix. The second-year signal caller has thrown 19 touchdowns through 12 games, but also has 9 interceptions. His 61.6% completion percentage ranks 27th in the league, as does his passer rating of 85.8. But he seems to make the plays that matter the most.

Overall, throughout the 12 games the Broncos have played, they have won 10 of them, of which they have won 6 games with a margin of 3 points or less, and 7 with a margin of 4 points or less, if we include their 21-17 win over the Eagles.

Are the Denver Broncos Legit?

The biggest knock on the Broncos currently is that they keep winning all these close games. But we only have to go as far back as last season, when another AFC West team, the Kansas City Chiefs, pulled off a total of 12 one-score games, including the playoffs.

Anybody who followed the Chiefs closely last season would be fully aware of how they also struggled to dominate teams, yet made all the big plays when it mattered the most.  And, so far, the Broncos seem to be doing the same.

However, what is eye-catching is Denver’s struggles to run the ball effectively following the injury to J.K. Dobbins. With their best running back missing the remainder of the season, that is a crucial blow to Dnever’s chances. Moreover, Bo Nix, although he has played well at times, the quarterback play hasn’t been consistent enough.

As we head closer to the business end of the season, it will be interesting to keep an eye out on Denver’s remaining games. 4 of their last 5 games will be against the Packers, Jaguars, Chiefs, and the Chargers, all games that could test their ability to win close games. Next up for the Broncos, though, are the Las Vegas Raiders, a game they should win comfortably.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
