Now in its 56th edition on the ATP and 13th for the WTA, the Citi Open is one of the longest-standing combined events in American tennis. Launched in 1969 as the Washington Star International, the tournament was originally played on clay before transitioning to hardcourts in 1986. The women’s competition was added in 2011, initially held in College Park, Maryland, before both events merged at the current venue the following year.
Sebastian Korda enters as the defending men’s champion after edging out Flavio Cobolli in a tight three-set final last year. On the women’s side, Paula Badosa returns as titleholder, having defeated Marie Bouzkova in a hard-fought three-setter.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
