5th seed from Qualifying vs 5th seed in the main draw.
Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva will look to settle an old score against Polish No. 2 Magdalena Frech at the 2025 Citi DC Open 2025. This Round of 32 contest is set to be their first meeting in the main draw of a WTA tournament. Frech, who is the fifth seed at the event this year, will have to contend with an in-form Starodubtseva. The 25-year-old is yet to drop a set after coming through qualifying. Today, we will look at their rivalry, the predictions and BetMGM’s odds for the match-up.
Despite going through a rough patch this year, Magdalena Frech is still ranked No. 24 in the world. The 27-year-old Pole is yet to make a quarterfinal in 2025 – making the Citi DC Open in Washington an important tournament for her. Frech earned her last tour-level win at the Berlin Championships, where she defeated 6th seed Mirra Andreeva before losing to Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova. She enters this match with a disheartening 8-18 record this year.

Yuliia Starodubtseva broke new ground in May, when she reached the Round of 16 in Madrid before entering her maiden Grand Slam third round at the French Open. Currently ranked No. 74 in the world, Starodubtseva is the first Ukrainian woman in the Open Era to qualify for all the main draws at the majors in a single season. Seeded No. 5 in the Washington qualifying, Starodubtseva beat Rebecca Marino and Alana Smith to enter the main draw.
The head-to-head record between Frech and Starodubtseva stands at 1-0, in favour of the higher ranked Polish starlet. While they are yet to face each other in the main draw of an event, Frech overcame her counterpart in Round-1 Qualifying at the 2023 San Diego Open.

With both players searching for a positive start to the final stretch of the season, expect some hard-hitting groundstrokes on Monday. Frech may have the ranking in her favour, but Starodubtseva is carrying some momentum from the qualifiers. She won 81% points on first serve in her most recent match, and converted 5/6 break points. While it promises to be a closely fought clash, Starodubtseva could cause an upset.
Prediction: Yuliia Starodubtseva in three sets.
