Manchester United Revamps Scouting Network Under Christopher Vivell’s Leadership

Mayur Dedwal

Manchester United have restructured its scouting network, reducing it to a core group of ten first-team scouts. This is aimed to imply a broader strategy to modernise recruitment under the guidance of Christopher Vivell.

Vivell joined United initially on a short-term basis in 2024 before securing a permanent role. Being entrusted with reshaping the club’s approach to talent identification, his vision aligns with minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambition to bring United’s recruitment into the 21st century.

Christopher Vivell Takes Charge of Talent Identification

Previously, United’s scouting network was notably vast, employing over 100 scouts globally. However, following two rounds of cutting off over the past year, the club has shifted toward a more modern method.

Now the Manchester United Club sources indicate that Vivell’s mandate is to take full ownership of this compact network. Addressing years of inconsistent transfer market performance, this change reflects trends across European football, with clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion bringing back traditional scouting in favour of advanced data analytics.

Vivell’s expertise, honed during his time at RB Leipzig and a brief stint as Chelsea’s technical director, positions him as the ideal candidate to lead this transformation. At 38, Vivell brings a modern perspective to United’s recruitment, emphasising efficiency and precision.

The club’s leadership believes this restructured scouting network, combined with enhanced data analytics, will restore United’s reputation for smart, impactful signings.

With many recruits like Antony, Jadon Sancho and Erasmus Hojlund not turning out in their favour, the scouting team will be under immense pressure in this window. Ruben Amorim who will need a deeper squad to challenge the upper ranks of English football will hope to benefit from this scouting implementation.
