La Liga Prize Money: How Much Are Barcelona Earning for Winning the League?

Moumita Dutta

A Triumphant Domestic Treble Turns Into a Massive Revenue Lifeline for the Catalan Giants.

Barcelona have fired up under Hansi Flick in his first season. The Catalan club have won the domestic treble securing the Spanish Supercup, Copa del Rey, and La Liga. And the wins didn’t only add silverware to their illustrious cabinet, but also unlocked a major financial windfall.

This comes as a blessing to the club especially at a time with such financial issues. The Catalan giants clinched their 28th league title with a resounding win over local rivals Espanyol. They went seven points ahead of their arch-rivals Real Madrid in second place, mathematically winning the title with that win.

La Liga TV Revenues and Performance Bonuses

While it is unfortunate that unlike many other top European leagues, La Liga does not offer a fixed cash prize to its champion, Barcelona are still poised to earn a good amount of money. This will instead come from revenue distribution by the league. The revenue will be coming from television rights.

Barcelona, as champions, are projected to receive the largest share. They may receive approximately 17% of the total pool. As per the current estimates, this should amount to around €58.4 million. Performance-based and market variable payments should further elevate that total significantly.

As per Diario Sport, this season’s total haul for Barcelona from the domestic success this season could range between €60 million and €90 million. This will be after factoring in additional sources like the Spanish Super Cup (€9 million) and Copa del Rey (€1.2 million).

Hence, the total domestic earnings certainly look increasingly healthy. Adding to this is their UEFA Champions League campaign, where reaching the semi-finals against Inter Milan brought in at least €83 million. However, Barcelona may not be seeing the entire amount in their hands for a few of these following reasons:

A part of Barcelona’s La Liga revenue is earmarked to repay Sixth Street. They are the American investment firm that purchased a chunk of their future TV rights. While this deal offered the club short-term liquidity when needed, it now reduces their immediate financial benefit from this year’s league success.

Added to that, La Liga disburses its payments over five years. They provide 35% of it in the first year. That is then followed by staggered installments. They do this to ensure financial discipline among clubs. Hence, the Blaugrana may not be able to use most of the money that is set to come in.

A Boost Toward Financial Stability for Barcelona

Even with all the constraints, it is a financial boost that comes at a pivotal time for Barcelona. The club is still navigating La Liga’s tight financial fair play regulations. Even a little amount of additional revenue will open doors to contract negotiations, player signings, and infrastructural improvements.

They narrowly missed out on the Champions League this season. A number of key players’ injuries was one of the reasons and they are still fighting a goalkeeper dilemma. Hence, this summer transfer window may be key for next season’s preparations. And the financial rewards can help a lot in that endeavour.
