Major Teams Have Been Linked With the Argentina No.1 Amid Growing Exit Rumours.
In what appeared to be an emotional farewell, Emiliano Martinez was seen in tears during Aston Villa’s recent 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. This has led to widespread speculation about his future. The Argentine goalkeeper joined the club from Arsenal back in 2020.
Since then, he has established himself as a club legend. In the midst of it, he also became a two-time FIFA Best Goalkeeper award winner. Yet, his heartfelt wave to fans at Villa Park on what may have been his last home game signals that change is coming.
Villa manager Unai Emery remained reserved when he was asked about Martinez’s future. He said, “We will see. Of course, it is the last match here, and I don’t know. We will see about the team, the players.” Emery reiterated the need for focus ahead of Villa’s season finale against Manchester United.

According to multiple reports, Emi Martinez has received three formal offers. One of them has come from Saudi Arabia and two from major European clubs. While it’s unknown which Saudi club has approached him, reportedly FC Barcelona and Manchester United have already made their offers.
Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation remains uncertain with Marc-Andre ter Stegen sidelined most of the season due to injury. Meanwhile, their backup goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, who came on a short-term deal but played almost all games for the Catalan club, is nearing contract expiry date.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have had a turbulent season between the posts. Andre Onana’s performances have been under scrutiny, with calls even emerging for the return of former stalwart David De Gea. Martinez played a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup win.
Hence, he would bring proven reliability and leadership to either of the two clubs. Hence, despite interest from the Saudi Pro League, Martinez could still prefer a move to a Champions League-contending European side. With his best days still ahead, he certainly still has a lot to offer.
Although his contract was extended to 2029, Aston Villa reportedly see this as an opportunity to cash in. The club is known to be open to major deals as they sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus for a significant fee last year. Jamie Redknapp said on Sky Sports:
“What a signing he has been… but it looks like he was waving goodbye.” Roy Keane added, “He’ll be a big loss… it does look like he is saying his final goodbyes.” With Europe’s elite circling and Villa possibly ready to sell, Martinez’s next move could help the big names seal the deal in the Champions League.
