Manchester City End Pursuit of Florian Wirtz Amid Interests From Other Big Names

Financial Hurdles and Faith in Foden Prompt City To Cool Interest in Bayer Leverkusen Star.

Reportedly, Manchester City have withdrawn from the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. Apparently, they’ve cited financial impracticality as the key factor in making this decision to back out. He was being pursued by the club as a potential successor to Kevin De Bruyne. Hence, the German international was on their radar for a high-profile midfield reinforcement.

However, talks were held last week between City representatives and Wirtz’s camp. And that led the club to step away from negotiations. A source told ESPN that “club bosses believe the finances that would be involved are not workable and that Wirtz is destined for a summer move to Bayern Munich.” Even so, Man City rivals Liverpool have also shown some interest in Wirtz.

Sky-High Valuation Ends Interest from Manchester City

As per some reports, Leverkusen have put the valuation of Wirtz somewhere around €300 million. That is after accounting for transfer fees and long-term wages. And this amount would make it the costliest deal in Man City’s history if completed.

That figure far exceeds the club’s current appetite for spending. Especially after a significant outlay during the January window. City’s financial caution echoes similar past transfer decisions. The club previously walked away from deals for Harry Kane, Fred, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Jorginho, due to inflated fees.

Meanwhile, they later secured more financially balanced signings like Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland. This latest decision also reflects Pep Guardiola’s confidence in Phil Foden. The English midfielder has been increasingly central to Guardiola’s plans.

Bayern Munich & Liverpool Still in the Frame

There have been growing rumours of Wirtz’s possible move to Leverkusen’s domestic rivals Bayern Munich. However, Leverkusen’s CEO Fernando Carro publicly denied any approach from Bayern Munich. He said, “I know it’s not true, and it’s annoying when you read reports that aren’t true.”

Even so, several reports suggest that the Bundesliga champions remain front-runners for Wirtz’s signature. Meanwhile, Liverpool, too, have shown interest. Especially with Wirtz’s teammate Jeremie Frimpong undergoing a medical at Anfield.

However, expectations on Merseyside also lean toward Wirtz ending up in Munich. Despite walking away from Wirtz, City continue to explore midfield options. Reportedly, they’re considering Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White among other names. The club is actively preparing for a life after De Bruyne.
