Jessica Pegula latest victim to Round 1 Upset at Wimbledon 2025, Falls in straight set to Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Cocciaretto secured her first career top-5 victory.

World no. 3, Jessica Pegula also joined the list of top-seed players who faced first-round exit in the 2025 Wimbledon. In first two days of the Grand Slam, we have witnessed a series of upsets in world’s biggest grass-court competition. The latest name is Jessica Pegula, who was defeated by Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretton in straight sets.

Pegula entered the Wimbledon championship with grass-court title in Bad Homburg where she defeated Iga Swiatek in the final. It was completely a shocker for the tennis fans that current world No. 3 couldn’t survive against the unseeded player. With this loss, Pegula’s long 8-match winning streak in Slams first-round ended.

Cocciaretto Dispatches World No. 3 in Straight Sets, Drops Biggest Upset of Wimbledon 2025

Elisabetta Cocciaretto was all over the American ace in the first-round clash as she took first set 6-2. Pegula looked clueless in the second set as well and the world No. 3 struck a mere five winners in the match which lasted 58 minutes only. Pegula made 24 unforced errors and landed only half her first serves. Cocciaretto outclassed the 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist 6-3 in the second set to reach the second round of the competition.

Pegula looked subdued from the start and it was unexpected from the player, who won a grass-court title last week. The American ace posted a 35-12 record this season with three titles in Austin, Charleston, and Bad Homburg. However, the previous form couldn’t help in the first-round and she suffered first-round exit for the first time in Grand Slams since French Open 2020.

“I played a really great champion. She’s an unbelievable player, she’s a great example for all of us,” the 24-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto said in her on-court interview after the win.

Cocciaretto secured her first career top-5 victory and first top-10 win since 2023. She also avenged the 2023 Wimbledon 3rd round loss when Pegula dispatched the Italian ace in straight sets. The 24-year-old reached the second-round of the Wimbledon for the third time as she previously won the main-draw clash in 2022 and 2023. On the other hand, Pegula, who reached five singles’ finals this year, will focus on the US Open at home.
