The opening day of Wimbledon 2025 belonged to the Brits. In a landmark performance, seven British players, including Cameron Norrie, Oliver Tarvet, Arthur Fery, Billy Harris, Emma Raducanu, Sonay Kartal, and Katie Boulter, won their first-round matches. Marking the most singles victories by home players on a single day at Wimbledon in the Open Era.

Sonay Kartal capped the historic day with a spirited performance, toppling 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 to notch the biggest win of her career. Former British No. 1 Katie Boulter also delivered one of the biggest upsets of the day, stunning Paula Badosa 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in a dramatic three-setter.

Emma Raducanu, now the top-ranked British woman, took down fellow Brit Mimi Xu in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and reflected on the occasion with pride. She said to BBC, “It’s incredible with so many Brits in the draw. I think it’s great for the spectators, too, to have so many Brits to follow in the draw. As we win matches, it’s more and more exciting.”

Rising Hopes and Breakthrough Moments

Wildcard Arthur Fery added his name to the headlines by knocking out 20th seed Alexei Popyrin in four sets (6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4), earning a second-round clash with Luciano Darderi. Billy Harris, making his main draw debut, looked composed in a straight-sets win over Dusan Lajovic (6-3, 6-2, 6-4), and now faces Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

Qualifier Oliver Tarvet impressed with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Leandro Riedi, booking a daunting second-round date with second seed Carlos Alcaraz. Cameron Norrie, the most experienced of the group, survived a tough four-set battle against Roberto Bautista Agut (6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6), and will now face 12th seed Frances Tiafoe.

With ten British women in action, the most at Wimbledon since 1992, the home crowd had plenty to cheer for. And with this record-breaking Day 1 in the books, British tennis fans can now dare to dream of a deeper home run at SW19. Today, on Day 2, nine British players are set to take the court, including top-ranked Jack Draper. Can the Seven-Brit’ record be topped?
