Both players won their most recently contested tournament.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner returns for the fourth match of his comeback trail at the 2025 Italian Open in Rome. He will face two-time Roland Garros finalist Casper Ruud in a high stakes quarterfinal on Thursday. The winner of this match will take on either Tommy Paul or Hubert Hurkacz in the semifinal stage.
The 2025 Australian Open champion is featuring in just his second tournament of the year. After a three month suspension due to a positive doping test, Sinner has looked flawless in his comeback at home. The 23-year-old wins 85% of his service games on this surface, and comes into the Ruud encounter with an 8-1 clay court record over the past year. Having dropped just two sets en route to the trophy in Melbourne Park, Sinner is yet to give up a set in Rome this week.

After a mediocre start to his clay court campaign, Casper Ruud shut down his haters by capturing the Mutua Madrid Open championship two weeks ago. A serial winner on the red dirt, the 26-year-old defeated five seeds in a row en route to the title. Ruud is a quarterfinalist from last year’s Paris Olympics and boasts of over 81% service game wins on clay. He has beaten Bublik, Berrettini and Munar to enter the final eight stage.
Jannik Sinner has a 3-0 head to head record against Casper Ruud. This will be the first meeting between these players in 2025.
Ruud is yet to win a single set in six attempts vs his three-time Grand Slam winning opponent. The Norwegian has had the misfortune of facing Sinner only on indoor hard courts – where he is bound to face the wrath of the Italian’s pacy groundstrokes. In their most recent encounter, Sinner blew away Ruud in the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals by dropping just three games in the whole match.

Ruud on facing Jannik Sinner next in Rome
— The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) May 14, 2025
“Nobody has won more clay court matches than you over the last 5 years.. how much confidence does that give you as you try and beat Jannik Sinner for the first time on clay tomorrow?”
Casper: “Match wins is one thing and of course to do… pic.twitter.com/3f3mXHAAqZ
There is no better surface and occasion for Ruud to amass his first win over the top ranked player in the world. The courts in Rome are slow and the ball sits up – making it tough to hit through the line. The Oslo-born starlet is likely to adopt a deep position in rallies and attempt to frustrate Sinner by denying him easy winners. While he has acknowledged that it could be the “toughest match of the year”, we predict a titanic upset. However, do not be surprised if the local boy uses his home court to his advantage.
Prediction: Casper Ruud in three sets.

Jannik Sinner Win: -350
Casper Ruud Win: +270
