Jannik Sinner Trails Only Rafael Nadal in Massive Centennial Grand Slam Match Record After Wimbledon 2025 Success

Sankalp Harikrishnan

The World No. 1 is 26-3 this year after Wimbledon.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner fended off past demons to beat his biggest rival Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 Wimbledon Championships final on Sunday. The 23-year-old produced a fine 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 win to dethrone the Spaniard and be crowned the new King of All England Club. Shattering a plethora of records along the way, Sinner achieved the biggest success of his young career yet. One of these records also involves the great Rafael Nadal.

Jannik Sinner Second Only to Rafael Nadal After 100 Grand Slam Matches

Sinner was coincidentally playing his 100th Grand Slam match in the Wimbledon 2025 final. The Italian, who turned pro in 2018, dropped the first set in his quest for a fourth major championship. He has previously acquired two Australian Open trophies alongside the US Open in 2024. By coming back to win on Centre Court vs Alcaraz, the top seed capped off No. 100 in style.

With 81 wins out of his first 100 matches at the majors, Jannik Sinner ranks second among the all-time most successful men’s athletes. Only the great Rafael Nadal, with 86 wins, won more matches after completing his first Grand Slam century. The Spanish southpaw went on to claim 22 Grand Slam trophies – including 14 at Roland Garros alone. It will be interesting to see if Sinner can emulate Nadal over time.

Sinner’s Quest for Year-End No. 1 in the Second Half of 2025

Despite winning Wimbledon, Sinner has some tough challenges to retain his World No. 1 ranking. At the moment, the four-time major champion sits 3,430 points in front of his Spanish rival. However, the fact that Alcaraz did not have the best ending to 2024 will play into his hands. While the 22-year-old is defending merely 60 points across the North American swing, Sinner will be defending 3,200 points.

Having won Cincinnati and the US Open last year, Sinner now faces the stern test of retaining his titles. This means that whoever has the better run in the USA, will effectively be close to holding the top spot after September. Alcaraz did not feature in the Canada Masters last year, and lost in Round-2 of Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows.
