‘Alcaraz Same as Federer But Better Level’ – Serena Williams’ Former Coach Dishes Out Bold Take

Federer managed to win 8 Wimbledon titles; Alcaraz is at 2.

With the rise of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the tennis world has started questioning whether the next era of elite ATP stars has arrived. Over the French Open and Wimbledon 2025, fans were treated to two of the most high quality Grand Slam summit clash encounters in the recent past. Naturally, the comparisons to the ‘Big-3’ – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic – have already started. Now Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, has made a bold statement.

55-year-old Mouratoglou has worked with some of the best players in the past. Currently associated with four-time major champion Naomi Osaka, the Frenchman’s most recent stint was with Danish prodigy Holger Rune. As a result, Mouratoglou would have spent plenty of time analysing the likes of fellow young guns – Alcaraz and Sinner. The Top-2 players in the world have captured the last seven Slams, and don’t seem to be slowing down in their pursuit for more.

At Wimbledon 2025, Sinner defeated Alcaraz 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 to complete his redemption arc after the gut-wrenching French Open final. In the process, the 22-year-old Spaniard was denied a hat-trick of championships at SW19. Alcaraz’s grass court style of play involves taking the ball on the rise, slicing and throwing in drop shots – a tactic reminiscent of one of the most legendary champions at All England Club.

Patrick Mouratoglou Highlights Similarities Between Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz

Mouratoglou has previously declared that he believes Carlos Alcaraz will end up with more Grand Slam titles than Jannik Sinner. A keen observer of the game, he has won 40 trophies as a coach (including singles and doubles). Delving deeper into the Alcaraz-Federer analogy, Mouratoglou revealed all on his own Instagram account on Sunday.

“When I say that Carlos [Alcaraz] plays the same way as Roger [Federer], but just at a better level, because it’s a new generation and tennis evolves. What I mean is they have the same type of game – incredible forehand moving around the backhand. A very complete game using everything – drop shots, return volley, serve and volley, trying to dominate [by] taking the ball early and coming to the net.”

During his playing days, Federer won an unthinkable eight titles at Wimbledon – including five consecutive championships between 2003-2007. Mouratoglou continued, “This is a complete game. Who does that on tour? Not many players, it’s very rare. A lot of players ‘technically’ know how to do it, but they don’t dare doing it during the matches. Carlos and Roger have the same concept of tennis.”
