Stefon Diggs was recently signed by the New England Patriots on a three-year $69 million deal which includes $26 million guaranteed, as per reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That may be a lot of money to offer for somebody like Diggs, who is coming off of an ACL tear that he suffered in late October and kept him out for the rest of the 2024 season. The fact remains that the Patriots still have one of the largest cap spaces and they can simply just afford to sign players to those kind of deals, even if it may not prove to be fruitful. That’s a luxury not many teams can afford.
Diggs had initially visited the Patriots last week and now he’s signed with the team. The 31 year old wideout, last season, played and started in 8 games for the Houston Texans and racked up 47 receptions and 496 receiving yards. Prior to the Texans, Diggs played for the Buffalo Bills but after he started showing signs of decline, they traded him after spending four seasons with the Bills.

According to Fox Sports’ 2024 Offensive Rankings, the Patriots found themselves at the bottom of the pile with the Chicago Bears! Even though Diggs may not be the player he used to be with the Bills, he is still a solid weapon and can significantly contribute to a team. The New England Patriots had drafted quarterback Drake Maye as their third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Many Patriot fans were delighted and it also gave the franchise a lot of hope for the future.
Maye played in 13 games last season and registered over 2000 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. However, since the Patriots did not provide him with much help, Maye had a tough time trying to beat other teams and he finished the season with a 3-9 record.

Now that they have added Stefon Diggs, Maye should have a much better time throwing the football as Diggs is a reliable target, who prior to his injury last season, had 6 straight seasons with 1000 plus receiving yards, and was selected to the Pro Bowl 4x and the All-Pro team twice. Not only does Diggs have the talent to be a great addition in the Patriots’ offense, he can also be a veteran leader for the young Patriots squad.
Diggs, if you look at the way he played for the Bills, was one of the top WRs in the NFL. Not only did he elevate his game to the highest of levels, he also helped Josh Allen, to quite an extent, turn into a superstar. With the Patriots now acquiring his talents, he could possibly do the same for Drake Maye.
The Texans will surely miss Stefon Diggs’ leadership — something he’ll now bring to a young Patriots team.

His time in Houston was brief, but his impact will be lasting.

Things should work out great for Diggs and the Patriots since the wideout already has connections at New England. He will reunite with the current wide receiver coach for the Patriots in Todd Downing, who Diggs knew since his Minnesota days. The Patriots are headed in the right direction and could soon be back into the playoff picture, provided that Maye doesn’t fall into a sophomore slump, and continues to build from what he achieved last season.

Diggs must be hungry to get back on the field next season and prove that he’s still one of the top receivers, despite the injury. There’s been a lot of talk about his decline as a player, and playing for the Patriots should be the best opportunity for him to revive his career.
