Holger Rune Provides Positive Update With Latest Return to Practice Amid Injury Recovery

Sankalp Harikrishnan

Rune had to end his season in mid-October due to injury.

Former World No. 4 Holger Rune is making rapid strides in his recovery from a devastating achilles injury in October. The Danish prodigy was seemingly making solid progress at the 2025 Stockholm Open, before the injury prevented him from taking any further part in the tournament. Rune fell to the floor mid-match, and was initially sidelined for close to a year. However, his latest video will leave his fans with a sense of optimism.

In the semifinal stage of the BNP Paribas Nordic Open in Stockholm, Rune was facing Frenchman Ugo Humbert. The top seed started strong, striking fierce groundstroke winners from the baseline. At 6-4 2-2 however, tragedy struck. Rune fell to the floor during a nervy rally, and looked to be in agonizing pain. The 22-year-old had to eventually be carried off the court, and took no further part in the competition.

Having initially been sidelined for 9-12 months after leaving the court in tears, Rune is scheduled to return only in the second half of the 2026 season. “My Achilles is fully broken on the proximal part, meaning [that] I need operation already next week and from here rehabilitation. Thank you for all your support now and always,” Rune said in an official statement after the injury.

Holger Rune Releases New Injury Recovery Video

Despite the setback, Rune is actively pushing to return to action as quickly as possible. He won a solitary title in 2025 – at the Barcelona Open, where he defeated current World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Rune ended the season at No. 15 in the world, and with a win-loss record of 36-22. With his sights set firmly on making a statement comeback, the Dane returned to the gym merely ten days after being sidelined from the tour.

“Keeping the rehab fun,” he captioned the social media post. While the recovery update was met with mixed reactions regarding whether or not he should be back on court so soon, Rune has made it clear that he is hungry to pick up the racquet again. A finalist at Indian Wells 2025, the fiery young talent has now released another clip of his recovery progress.

In the latest update, Rune was seen hitting balls on one leg while his injured left leg remains in the protective boot. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and recovery at the Monte Carlo Country Club, where he carefully balanced himself to strike some forehand and backhand groundstrokes. Considering the fact 2025 proved to be bitter-sweet for Rune, a whole-hearted effort at returning to success next year will be on the cards for the ‘Great Dane.’
