Former West Ham manager Graham Potter is on the verge of being appointed as the new Sweden national team head coach. Reports have emerged from Sweden that the 50-year-old Englishman has agreed to take the role on an initial short-term basis to help revive the nation’s faltering World Cup qualification campaign.
Notably, Graham Potter has long maintained strong ties to Swedish football. He was swiftly identified as the Swedish FA’s top target following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was sacked earlier this week. Sweden’s shock 1–0 defeat to Kosovo left Sweden’s hopes of qualification hanging by a thread. Sweden will now face Switzerland away and Slovenia at home in their final two group games.

Despite their current struggles, Sweden could still qualify for the World Cup play-offs through their 2024–25 Nations League performance. Notably, Sweden topped their Nations League League C Group 1 ahead of Slovakia. That achievement will provide the route for Sweden to go into the World Cup play-offs. Potter’s arrival will be viewed as a stabilising move for a team in transition. Potter will be tasked to rebuild a side that boasts elite attacking talent in Liverpool forward Alexander Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Potter remains a highly respected figure in Sweden, having famously guided Ostersund FK from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan. Potter helped Ostersund secure three promotions in four seasons and his side also lifted the Svenska Cupen in 2017. Under his leadership, Ostersund made headlines with their Europa League campaign, defeating the likes of Galatasaray and Hertha Berlin. Although his recent stint at West Ham ended in disappointment with just six wins in 23 matches, his deep understanding of Swedish football has made him the standout choice to lead the national team’s revival.
