Frustration for Fritz As Wimbledon Suspends Multiple Day 1 Matches

Devavrat Kulkarni

Wimbledon follows a strict curfew resulting in match suspensions

Fifth seed on the men’s side, Taylor Fritz, was left utterly frustrated last night as Wimbledon officials stepped in to stop his match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The American and the Frenchman were locked in quite a tussle as the match was heading into the fifth and final set.

Having lost the first two sets, Fritz was on his comeback and even managed to secure the fourth set after being down 1-5 in the tiebreak. With momentum on his side heading into the decider, the American was visibly unhappy about the decision to suspend the match midway.

However, it was not only this match that was suspended, as multiple others, such as the one between Alexander Zverev and Arthur Rinderknech, were also halted before they could start the third set. Currently, both players have won one set each.

Why Did Wimbledon Suspend Matches on Day 1?

Suspending matches at Wimbledon is nothing new. This happens almost every year, and the main reason behind the suspension is due to the time curfew that is in place. Initially, the curfew at SW19 used to be whenever it started to get dark and difficult for players to see the ball.

That is because the Wimbledon grounds didn’t have lights. However, since the tournament put roofs on the Centre Court and Court Number 1, the lights have allowed play to continue until 11 PM local time.

Why Does Wimbledon Follow a Time Curfew?

Ideally, the lights on both the main courts can allow matches to continue until the end, as is the case at other tournaments. But Wimbledon is not able to extend matches beyond the 11 PM time limit since the public transport ends at midnight on weekdays. Fans returning home via public transport need enough time to reach the Tube Station.

In the event that a match is reaching its conclusion or if a tiebreak is nearing its end, the tournament officials can extend play for a few minutes, but the margin for extension is very small.

Is There Any Alternative To Prevent Match Suspensions at Wimbledon?

One alternative to prevent matches from being suspended is shifting the start time, especially for matches taking place on Court No. 1 Centre Court. These matches tend to start at around 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM local time.

The first few rounds are quite hectic with back-to-back matches, featuring up to 4 matches a day. If matches extend to five sets or long duration, it becomes difficult to finish them as per the time curfew.

However, Wimbledon, which is the most traditional tournament on the tennis calendar, stands out for adhering to its strict rules and traditions, implemented many years ago. The tournament is not open to changes as openly as many others.

Concerning the time curfew, Wimbledon prides itself on allowing its fans to reach the venue on time, enabling them to enjoy the site prior to the matches, and soak in the atmosphere before enjoying a long day of matches. Also, since the top players all feature on the main courts, the timings are kept in such a way as to attract maximum viewership on a global level.

Considering these reasons, it does not seem like Wimbledon will be changing its time curfew or the start time of matches anytime soon. As a result, players and tennis fans just have to hope for the best.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
