It was only a fortnight ago that Ferrari made a jump in the constructor standings. The Italian team went to second place in standings with Leclerc’s surprise podium in Spain. There were also reports that the team is finally making progress with their 2025 championship challenger.
However, as soon as they reached Canada, once more the entire progress was gone to dust. The Scarlet SF25s were not producing any pace compared to the much faster competitors on top. To make matters worse, Charles Leclerc did not attend two practice sessions. The Canadian GP was equally bad for the team. Lewis Hamilton started on P5 but quickly went down the order. He had to suffer massive damage after running over an animal. Charles Leclerc’s bad qualifying left him fending for points in the mid-pack.
Fred Vasseur Contemplates Ferrari’s Issues in the Recent Weekend
The cycle of performance and no performance has been going on for a long time. Since the start of the 2025 season, Ferrari have never found consistency. One weekend, they are looking like a top-team. In another weekend, they losing out by rather huge margins.
“I think we made too many mistakes collectively from the beginning with the crash in FP1, with the mistake in Quali, with the marmot in the race. And at the end the fight is so tight – I’m not speaking about lap time or race time, I’m speaking about that you can change the position for almost nothing from one weekend to another one.”
Fred Vasseur believes Ferrari "failed massively" in Canada 🇨🇦

“It’s a good lesson also from Mercedes. They were nowhere the last three weekends and they were able to have the two cars on the podium this weekend. I’m not sure that they changed completely the car, it’s more that from the beginning of the weekend, from Lap 1 on Friday morning, they were there, they did a good job in the preparation and so on. And honestly this weekend, for different reasons, the focus was not always there.”
Vasseur added that the margins in the 2025 season are really tight. This means the teams need to dedicate themselves to the weekend even before the cars hit the tarmac. In terms of setup and track behaviour, there needs to be many minute changes in the car performance. The team boss will rely on the overall setup of the car throughout the weekend, rather than upgrades when Ferrari visit Austria later in June.
I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
For me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university's Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
Message to Readers: I promise you one day you'll see me managing operations on track with a Formula 1 team ; )
