Promising Performance to Overwhelming Loss- How Ferrari Lost Their Advantage at the Hungary Grand Prix?

Rohan Singh

Charles Leclerc lost the opportunity to convert his pole position to a magnificent victory at the 2025 Hungary Grand Prix

At the start of the weekend, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was not too confident about the weekend. Sure, Hungary is one of the hardest tracks in Formula 1. But Leclerc was particularly not excited to race at the Hungaroring in 2025. The podiums he won in the last two weekends were simply not enough to convince his about his car’s performance. Then came Saturday, almost nobody expected Ferrari to be even remotely competitive.

However, one thing led to the other and soon Charles Leclerc was a pole position winner in 2025. The SF25 had been competing at front but never really had the performance to overtake the McLarens. The changing conditions in qualifying played to Charles Leclerc’s advantage and he was able to start the race with a lot of hopes. The entire community went wild calling it one of the best pole laps of his career. Nothing could prepare them for what was about to befall Leclerc and Ferrari on Sunday.

Charles Leclerc Goes from Pole Position to Penalty in the Hungary Grand Prix

The race start was well enough for Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari immediately jumped the gun and started to create a gap between himself and Oscar Piastri’s McLaren. The race was going well for the Monegasque. After the first round of pitstops, Leclerc was still a strong contender for the win.

With how things were unfolding in the race, almost everybody expected that it was a guaranteed podium finish for Ferrari. Their joy was soon about to turn to misery. Halfway through the race, Leclerc’s radio start buzzing with his complaints. He was not feeling good about the car and the tipped the team multiple times about performance drops.

After the second round of pitstops, Charles Leclerc was chasing Lando Norris for the victory. Ferrari fell in to McLaren’s bluff. The Papaya was going for a one-stop strategy with Norris and it was working out well for them. Here’s when things took a wrong turn in the Ferrari camp. Leclerc was losing pace badly. In no time, he was overtaken by Piastri.

Although, that was not the end of it. George Russell was in the hunt for a podium finish after a draught for the past month. Coming into turn-1 of lap 62, Leclerc was passed by Russell and he was sitting in P4. Unlucky for Leclerc he was never able to recover enough speed to put up a fight for even P3.

His manoeuvres while trying to defend Russell also landed him a 5s penalty. Charles Leclerc kept his P4 but it was far from what he deserved in Hungary after his performance. It was later revealed by the Monegasque that the Ferrari had issues with the chassis which lost them their pace and his sure-shot podium.
