Behind McLaren’s Hungary Grand Prix Victory- How the Papaya Strategy Ensured The Maximum Points for Them!

Rohan Singh

As Ferrari went downhill, the McLarens climbed to the top with their efficient tactics at the Hungary Grand Prix

In 2025, if you want to win a race, you should hope that the two McLarens end up clashing into each other. Such is the effect of the rocket-ship they have built this year. The championship battle is merely a “coin-toss” between the two Papaya drivers this year. The team is rewriting the rules and ways in the 2025 championship for both driver and constructor championships.

Only a year ago, Formula 1 fans were witnessing brute force and single-handed dominance under Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen. McLaren on the other hand, is terrorising grid by utilising all their resources. The Hungary Grand Prix was an effective example of their perfect operations in the 2025 season. Starting from P2 and P3, it initially felt like the team may lose a victory in Hungary. However, the pit-wall and strategy team made sure that once again, the top step of the podium was in Papaya colours.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Go 1-2 in Hungaroring With McLaren’s Tactics

McLaren had the advantage of starting in a good position in yesterday’s race. They were starting from the front row and second row for the Hungary GP. Initially, the team were laid back and Leclerc try and create a distance between himself and Piastri. The Aussie was asked to conserve his tyres and let the race play out.

The Hungary GP was 70 laps long and their cars have been the fastest all season. McLaren were keen enough to use it to their advantage during the race. Lando Norris initially fell down and lost his podium to George Russell but quickly made up for the same. First, McLaren tried to undercut Leclerc using Oscar Piastri. It was a brave move which did not pay out very well.

Although, the team still had track position with Norris controlling the lead of the race. The best part of McLaren’s garage in 2025 is inevitably their pit-stop team. They set the fastest pit times of 2025 twice in Hungary GP. It helped the Papaya cars minimise the loss and take the fight up-to Leclerc.

After the race reached halfway stage, the drama began unfolding. Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri were both running a two-stop strategy. Once again McLaren’s pitstop on lap-46 was the sole reason Piastri did not lose a lot of time to Charles Leclerc. The Aussie was easily able to pass Leclerc a few laps later.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris was leading the race with a one-stop strategy putting him at the center of attention. Oscar Piastri was rapidly closing the gap behind him. At one point, the two Papaya cars came close again. At the penultimate lap, almost everyone was shocked when Piastri had a lock up chasing Lando Norris.

The Aussie managed to keep control and Lando escaped the incident unscathed. The two Papaya cars were able to finish in P1 and P2 bringing home yet another easy victory for McLaren. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were the brawns and the pit-wall was the brains during the Hungary Grand Prix. This helped McLaren achieve 200 wins in their Formula 1 history.
