Bencic missed Roland Garros due to an arm injury.
Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic will return to grass court action at the 2025 Bad Homburg Open, as she faces Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the Round of 32 on Monday. The two stars are capable of producing fast-paced tennis of the highest order – making this encounter a mouth watering one. The winner of this match will face Maria Sakkari in the pre-quarterfinals.
It has been an injury-stricken campaign for Belinda Bencic thus far. The 28-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in her first Grand Slam after maternity leave, was dealt with an arm injury in Rome and Paris. Yet, the World No. 37 has an impressive 21-9 record in 2025. She is searching for her second trophy this year, after capturing the Abu Dhabi Open championship.

World No. 18 Ekaterina Alexandrova suffered one of the most gut-wrenching losses in recent times, when she gave up 11 match points during a semifinal loss to Elise Mertens at the Libema Open last week. She enters this match with a 23-12 record, and one title in 2025. Her winning rates on service games and return games are 68% and 50%, respectively.
Belinda Bencic leads the head-to-head against Ekaterina Alexandrova by 4-3. This translates to a 57.1% success rate against her Russian counterpart.
The rivalry between the two baseliners originated in 2019. Bencic, who reached the US Open semifinals later that year, defeated Alexandrova at the Indian Wells Round of 32 in straight sets. However, the now 30-year-old exacted revenge by winning the next two match-ups against the Swiss. Bencic eventually grabbed a stranglehold of the duel and edged in front.

More than anything, Bencic will be using this encounter to test out her arm. The Swiss starlet, who is making a return after a 1.5 month hiatus, will be looking to kick-start her grass court campaign in style. However, Alexandrova looked in fine touch at the Libema Open. She also ranks within the Top-10 in terms of break point conversion rate on this surface so far – which is normally the chink in her armor.
Prediction: Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets.
