Winner to face No. 1 seed and defending champ Fritz.
In this battle between the young powerhouses, Brazilian teen sensation Joao Fonseca takes on Zizou Bergs of Belgium in the 2025 Eastbourne Open Round of 32. It will be their first meeting, and an exciting one at that. The winner will face top seed and defending champion Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16.
18-year-old Joao Fonseca won his maiden tour-level title at the Argentina Open in February. The Rio-born prodigy plays an eccentric brand of tennis, filled with powerful strokes and unexpected winners. Having tasted success at the ATP Challenger level, Fonseca is searching for his first win of the European grass court swing. He has won 85% service games on this surface, and holds a 12-9 record in 2025.
Starting the year on a high note at the ASB Classic, Zizou Bergs fell short at the final hurdle. The Belgian is hunting for his first career championship, and turns to the hallowed grass for some respite. The 26-year-old also reached the final of the recently concluded Libema Open, and made the semis at the Open-13 in February. With a 21-14 win-loss record this year, he could pose a threat to his opponent.
The head-to-head between Fonseca and Bergs is currently 0-0. Monday’s Round of 32 match-up will be the first occasion of the two stars standing across the net.

Considering his narrow defeat at the Terra Wortmann Open, Fonseca will be desperate to get his grass court season rolling ahead of Wimbledon. The teenager will aim to play a high percentage of forehands, even if it means running around the backhand. For Bergs, a strong kick serve out wide on the ad court will be of vital importance to earn himself cheap points.
