Medvedev opens DC campaign against big-serving Opelka in a tricky second-round test.
Eighth seed Daniil Medvedev begins his North American hard-court swing today against unseeded Reilly Opelka in the second round of the Citi DC Open. Medvedev received a first-round bye, while Opelka edged past qualifier Murphy Cassone in a tight three-setter featuring back-to-back opening tiebreaks.

Medvedev has been a picture of consistency this season, reaching the final in Halle, where he upset Alexander Zverev before falling to Alexander Bublik, and making semifinal runs at Open 13 and Indian Wells. He’s also posted quarterfinal finishes in Doha, Dubai, Madrid, and Libema. The former world No. 1 has tallied 270 aces so far, winning 75% of first-serve points and 33% on first-serve returns, and converting 38% of 302 break-point chances.
Daniil Medvedev defeats Alexander Zverev for a 4th consecutive time (now 13-7 h2h) 7-6(3), 6-7(1), 6-4 to reach his FIRST FINAL IN 15 MONTHS (!) in Halle.

Big win.

Opelka’s season, by contrast, has been stop-start. He made a strong statement in Brisbane, defeating Novak Djokovic en route to the final, only to withdraw due to a wrist injury. That setback forced him out of Auckland and preceded a string of early exits. Still, he’s found good moments, with quarterfinals in Dallas and Aix-en-Provence and a semifinal in Libema.
The American has racked up 507 aces this year, winning 78% of his first-serve points, but has struggled on return, with just 21% on first-serve returns and a 31% break-point conversion rate from 120 opportunities.

Daniil Medvedev holds a 4-2 edge over Reilly Opelka in their head-to-head, and intriguingly, their rivalry seems to follow a curious pattern. Medvedev tends to notch two consecutive wins before Opelka responds with one of his own. And this cycle has played out twice over their six career meetings. From their first clash in Washington back in 2017 to their most recent encounter at the 2025 Libema Open, the rhythm has remained strikingly consistent.
In 2021, Medvedev dominated with back-to-back straight-set wins, one on the clay of Roland Garros and another on the hard courts of Canada. But Opelka hit back in 2025, taking their grass-court quarterfinal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch with twin tiebreaks. Notably, the only straight-set victories in this matchup have come once each for both players, Medvedev in Canada and Opelka in their latest battle, while the remaining four matches went the distance.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | s-Hertogenbosch | Quarterfinal | Reilly Opelka | 7–6(5), 7–6(5) |
| 2021 | Canada | Final | Daniil Medvedev | 6–4, 6–3 |
| 2021 | Roland Garros | Round of 32 | Daniil Medvedev | 6–4, 6–2, 6–4 |
| 2020 | St. Petersburg | Round of 16 | Reilly Opelka | 2–6, 7–5, 6–4 |
| 2019 | Miami | Round of 32 | Daniil Medvedev | 7–6(5), 6–7(5), 7–6(0) |
| 2017 | Washington | Round of 64 | Daniil Medvedev | 6–7(8), 6–3, 7–6(6) |
| Daniil Medvedev | Category | Reilly Opelka |
| 14 | Current Ranking | 74 |
| 402-171 | Career W-L | 114-106 |
| 23-14 | YTD W-L | 18-14 |
| 20 | Career Titles | 4 |
| 1 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 0 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Medvedev enters this clash with far greater match rhythm and a more complete game. While Opelka’s serve can always keep things close, Medvedev’s consistency and superior return stats should give him the edge, especially on hard courts.
