Former US Open champ is yet to win a title in 2025.
After a discouraging Sunshine Double outing, Coco Gauff turns to the hallowed red dirt for some respite. The World No. 4 opens her account at the WTA Stuttgart Open against the unseeded Ella Seidel of Germany. Gauff is searching for her first title in 2025, as well as her only quarterfinal appearance since the Australian Open.
Possibly the most talented youngster of this generation in the WTA, Coco Gauff is already a Grand Slam and WTA Finals champion at the age of 21. Unfortunately, the current season hasn’t been all hunky dory for the former Roland Garros runner-up. After leaving Melbourne Park, Gauff has amassed merely four wins across four tournaments in the Middle East and the USA.

On the other side of the net, will be 20-year-old Ella Seidel. Not often can we say that Gauff will be competing against someone fairly younger than her. Yet, the German has showcased prowess over the course of her young career. A quarterfinal showing at the Winners Open in Romania is her best performance in 2025. Seidel pipped compatriot Tatjana Maria 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4 in Round-1.
The head to head record between Coco Gauff and Ella Seidel is currently 0-0. The two players, aged 21 and 20 respectively, are yet to face off in their young careers so far.
Gauff turned pro in 2018, and turned eyes when she beat Venus Williams at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. She rapidly rose up the ranks, and achieved her career-high WTA ranking of No. 2 in mid-2024 – nine months after winning her first Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open. Meanwhile, Seidel is currently on the cusp of breaking into the Top-100 and required one leap of faith to get there.

The indoor clay courts at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix are suited for someone like Coco. While she is a defensive wizard on slower surfaces, the indoors will add an extra bit of zip to her shots. It is likely that Seidel may not be able to handle the variety and power of the 21-year-old prodigious American. Provided she comes through, Gauff is likely to meet Jasmine Paolini in the last eight.
Prediction: Coco Gauff in straight sets.
Coco Gauff Win: 1/12
Ella Seidel Win: 6/1
