Inter manager Christian Chivu has expressed strong frustration over the repeated weather-related delays at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, urging organizers to make faster, more decisive calls to protect players and the integrity of matches. Chivu, speaking ahead of Inter’s clash with Fluminense, highlighted how long and unpredictable postponements are disrupting teams’ preparation, nutrition, and performance.
The tournament, currently being held in the United States, has been heavily affected by thunderstorms, with six matches delayed due to extreme weather conditions. Among the most notable was the round of 16 fixture between Benfica and Chelsea, which saw a staggering four-hour-and-39-minute delay before the Premier League side eventually ran out 4-1 winners. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca described the situation as farcical, and Chivu appears to share similar sentiments.
Chivu emphasized that these delays are not just logistical issues but also a significant challenge to player performance and health. Prolonged waiting times interfere with strict routines related to warm-ups, hydration, and nutrition — all critical to sustaining peak condition for high-intensity matches, particularly those that can stretch to 120 minutes. The Inter coach underlined that players are professionals who require stability in order to deliver consistently, and delays lasting hours throw every aspect of preparation into disarray.
The Romanian manager called on tournament organizers and match officials to take responsibility and act pre-emptively when there’s a credible weather threat. He argued that decisions must be made before teams are in the stadium or ready to play, rather than forcing squads to sit idle for hours waiting on updates. He stressed that such indecision not only undermines the sporting spectacle but can also risk player safety and wellbeing.
As the tournament progresses, Chivu’s message adds to growing criticism of how FIFA and local authorities have handled extreme weather. With more high-stakes matches to come, clubs and players will be hoping for quicker and more transparent communication to avoid further disruption.
