Chelsea Set to Sign Brighton Forward Joao Pedro Ahead of Club World Cup Clash

Ritam Dey

Chelsea are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brighton forward Joao Pedro, with the deal expected to be completed before their Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Palmeiras on Friday. The move could significantly strengthen Chelsea’s attacking options as they look to make an impact in the global competition.

According to The Athletic, the Brazilian forward is en route to the United States for a medical, with terms agreed between Chelsea and Brighton for a fee believed to exceed £50 million ($69 million). The transfer comes just two years after Pedro joined Brighton from Watford for a then club-record £30 million.

The 23-year-old made an immediate impact at the south coast club, netting 30 goals in 70 appearances for the Seagulls. Despite his impressive form, Pedro was absent from Brighton’s final two matches of last season following a training ground incident involving teammate Jan Paul van Hecke.

Chelsea Move Quickly Ahead of Club World Cup Deadline

FIFA regulations permit clubs involved in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup to register new players until July 3. With that deadline looming, Chelsea are working at pace to finalize their summer business and integrate new signings into their squad.

Pedro may not be the only fresh face available to Chelsea before Friday. The Blues are also on the verge of signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens in a deal reportedly worth up to €65 million ($76 million). The 20-year-old could be added to the squad in time to feature in the tournament.

Busy Summer Transfer Window for Chelsea

Chelsea have already been active in the market, securing the signatures of striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr. In addition, 18-year-old Brazilian talent Estevão Willian is also set to join the club following his Club World Cup campaign with Palmeiras.

With multiple promising additions and Joao Pedro’s deal nearly done, Chelsea are rapidly reshaping their squad under their new-look sporting structure as they target success both domestically and on the world stage.
