Chicago Bears fire Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron after offensive failures

Anamika Shrivastava

Chicago Bears replace offensive coordinator Shane Waldron with passing game coordinator Thomas Brown ahead of Week 11.

Shane Waldron’s tenure as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears will span just nine games.

The Bears revealed on Tuesday that they had dismissed Waldron before their Week 11 game against the Green Bay Packers. Chicago will substitute him with 38-year-old passing game coordinator Thomas Brown.

The Bears are taking action, which comes as no shock. Coach Matt Eberflus disclosed on Monday following the team’s 19-3 defeat against the New England Patriots in Week 10 that adjustments were on the horizon.

“There’s got to be a change and an adjustment to what we’re doing because we’ve obviously lost three in a row, But there’s also the sight of, we’re 4-5, haven’t played our division yet, and we’re in the process of starting that this week in a big football game. So, again, just in the process of getting that done.” : Eberflus said during a news conference.

At that moment, Eberflus was directly questioned regarding Waldron’s status. He refused to reveal if the 45-year-old remained on the team’s staff.

What was the reason behind the Bears’ decision to dismiss Shane Waldron?

The Bears dismissed Waldron after the recent hire was unable to energize the team’s offense in the early part of the 2024 season.

The Bears placed third-worst in the NFL for yards per game (277.7) and were 24th in scoring (19.4 points per game) in the season’s first half. Chicago is currently experiencing a three-game losing streak, during which it has gone an astonishing 23 possessions without scoring a touchdown.

Furthermore, first overall selection Caleb Williams has begun his career more slowly than expected by many. He has absorbed a league-leading 38 sacks and sits at 28th in passer rating among 34 qualified quarterbacks. His PFF score of 60.1 places him 34th out of 40 eligible quarterbacks.

All of that convinced Eberflus that the Bears required a shift in offensive leadership.

“After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully. I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.” :  Eberflus said in a statement released by the Bears.

Maybe the most severe criticism of Williams’ advancement? Four newcomers make it onto the NFL leaderboard for completion percentage, passer rating, and QBR. Williams places at the bottom of the group that features Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Bo Nix in all three areas.
