Brandon Moreno Pushes for Trilogy Bout With Alexander Pantoja at Noche UFC Mexico

Eric D

We saw Brandon Moreno face Steve Erceg in the UFC Fight Night main event at CDMX in Mexico City. The flyweight bout showcased Moreno’s veteran experience against Erceg’s technical striking. Moreno, a former two-time champ, started strong, as he dictated the pace in the first round of the contest. Erceg, coming off of two loses, found some rhythm in rounds two and three. However Moreno’s relentless output and sharper striking took over in the final rounds of the fight. If Erceg managed to land something on Moreno, the Mexican would immediately fire back with a combination. He never allowed Erceg to get shots off for free as he had an answer every single time.

The fight went the full five rounds as Judges scored it a unanimous decision in favor of Moreno, marking his first win on Mexican soil. Post-fight, Moreno called for a trilogy fight with flyweight champion Alexander Pantoja at Noche UFC. Meanwhile for Erceg, his three consecutive losses has dimmed his chances for a title shot. The crowd were absolutely thrilled to see their hometown fighter win, and it was a great performance by the Mexican.

Moreno Makes His Case for Another Fight Against Pantoja

Moreno after the fight, reportedly talked to UFC brass Hunter and asked him for a title shot against Pantoja at UFC 320 Guadalajara.

During the post-fight interview, a reporter asked Moreno about how confident he was on his sales pitch that he gave to Hunter Campbell. Moreno replied “How confident I am? Man I don’t even know. I don’t know nothing right now. I’m just happy, enjoying the moment. But let’s see what happens. I saw Hunter and he looked very happy. With the people, with the crowd… Who knows how much I moved the needle? Maybe not too much right. Flyweights, always with the same problem. That’s crazy but I really believe that every single I step in the octagon, the people go crazy. That’s a fact. So let’s see what happens.”

When the reporter asks Moreno about if he for sure wants a title shot next, Moreno replied “That’s the goal for sure… I think this is perfect, I think this is perfect even for the UFC and the promotion. If they want to get a pay-per-view event Noche UFC in September at Guadalajara, I think I’m the right choice.”

Moreno had previously fought Pantoja twice, but he ended up losing both the fights. His first fight came against Pantoja in May of 2018 where he lost via unanimous decision, and when Moreno faced Pantoja second time in July of 2023, he lost his flyweight title against him via split decision. With his latest answer, it looks like Moreno still believes that he can defeat Pantoja and retake the title from the current champ.
