Shelton’s serve misfires as Munar maintains precision to reach last eight
Second seed Ben Shelton was handed a surprise exit at the Swiss Indoors Basel after a straight-sets defeat to Jaume Munar. The Spaniard stayed composed throughout, earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 18 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. Munar will next face fifth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime, who continues his impressive late-season form.
A match up he loves 😍

The world No. 42 delivered a clinical display against one of the tournament’s favorites. Munar secured an early break in the first set and maintained his serve with precision, taking it 6-3. He was equally composed in the second, capitalizing on Shelton’s errors to break once more and seal the win.
Shelton entered the match still finding rhythm after returning from a knee injury that forced him to miss several events, including the Tokyo Open, Laver Cup, and Davis Cup. His first-round victory in Basel had been his first in Europe in months, but he could not carry that momentum forward. Even with landing 82% of first serves, he won only 61% of those points and failed to convert his lone break opportunity.
Jaume Munar officially becomes Ben Shelton's "daddy" beating the American 3x this season to reach the Basel QF (2 indoor hard, 1 clay):

Munar, on the other hand, remained consistent under pressure. The Spaniard fired nine aces, won 89% of his first-serve points, and saved the only break point he faced. He required a single break in each set to control the match and never allowed Shelton to find a foothold.
The defeat continues a rough stretch for Shelton, who also exited early in Shanghai after returning to competition. Munar, meanwhile, has been in solid form, breaking into the Top 40 for the first time and adding another top-10 scalp to his season.
Back from the brink 🤯

In the next round, Munar faces Auger-Aliassime for a place in the semifinals. The Canadian, a two-time Basel champion, has been rebuilding his confidence with a strong run to end the year. Shelton’s season, however, remains marked by inconsistency as he searches for rhythm and fitness in the final weeks of the ATP calendar.
