Rybakina aims to extend dominance as Mboko seeks breakthrough win
Second seed Elena Rybakina is set to face ninth seed Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2025. The Kazakh, one of the top four seeds, received a first-round bye and then dispatched Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. Mboko, meanwhile, has looked sharp, outlasting wild card Bianca Andreescu and qualifier Eva Lys, also in straight sets.
Rybakina comes into the match on the back of a strong season. She lifted the Ningbo title, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova and upsetting Jasmine Paolini, and also captured the Strasbourg crown with a three-set win over Liudmila Samsonova. Her consistency is evident in deep runs across the calendar with semifinals in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Washington, Montreal, and Cincinnati and quarterfinals in London, Berlin, and Wuhan. Across 69 matches, she’s served 457 aces, won 74.4% of first-serve points, and converted 42% of break points.

Mboko, enjoying a breakthrough season, has climbed to a career-high No. 23 in the world. The Canadian made main draws at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open and captured her first WTA title in Montreal, taking down Naomi Osaka in a comeback and also defeating Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff along the way. She also reached the final in the Parma 250k event but lost to Mayar Sherif. Her recent form has been patchy, with a withdrawal from Cincinnati due to a left wrist injury and early exits in Beijing, Wuhan, and Osaka. Across 22 matches, she’s fired 80 aces, won 64% of first serves, and converted 51.4% of break points.
