Jermall Charlo gives his insight into the upcoming mega fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford this September!
Boxing fans love picking sides when two legends collide, and September 13th promises to deliver exactly that kind of magic. Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will square off in Las Vegas on Netflix in what many consider the biggest superfight of 2025. Both fighters have dominated their respective weight classes for years, but this matchup forces Crawford to make a significant jump up to super middleweight to chase greatness.
The fight represents everything fans want to see: skill versus power, experience versus hunger, and two uncompromising champions willing to risk everything for legacy points. The Charlo family knows firsthand what it’s like to face the Mexican superstar at his home weight class. Jermell Charlo stepped up to challenge Canelo in September 2023, moving up from junior middleweight to super middleweight for his shot at undisputed glory. That fight didn’t go according to plan for the Charlo camp, as Canelo dropped Jermell and cruised to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. The experience left lasting impressions on both brothers, but it also provided valuable insights into what it takes to compete with one of boxing’s pound-for-pound kings at 168 pounds.
Jermall Charlo surprised many boxing insiders when he revealed his prediction for the upcoming superfight. Despite watching his twin brother struggle against Canelo’s size and power, Jermall believes Terence Crawford has what it takes to pull off the upset.
“I like Crawford in this fight. He’s staying big. My brother fought Canelo, not me. My brother told me that it was his mistake that he made. he thought going up in weight meant getting massive and big to beat Canelo. It made him slower, and his reflexes slower… With Crawford, you want to get big to try and absorb Canelo’s punches, but technically, that’s not the Crawford we’re going to see. Crawford is not a 168-pounder and he’s going up.”

The key difference, according to Jermall, lies in approach and preparation philosophy. Jermell made the mistake of trying to bulk up significantly for the Canelo fight, believing that added mass would help him absorb punishment and compete with the naturally bigger champion. That strategy backfired spectacularly, as the extra weight slowed down Jermell’s reflexes and mobility.
This painful experience shaped Jermall’s perspective on the Crawford vs Canelo matchup in unexpected ways. He believes Crawford’s natural boxing IQ and adaptability give him advantages that his brother didn’t possess going into that fight. While the size difference remains a significant factor, Jermall Charlo thinks Crawford’s technical superiority and ring sense could neutralize some of Canelo’s physical advantages.
