Is the new rule for Monaco GP going to work as intended?
The Monaco Grand Prix 2025 is getting a new rule this year. In order to make racing in the principality more exciting for fans, Formula 1 is changing the tyre strategy for the race. Ideally, Monaco has always favored a one-stop tyre strategy. The driver leading from pole stays on medium or hard tyres in order to get the win.
Monaco’s focus on grid position and lack of overtaking is not particularly liked by the fans. This year teams need to mandatorily run three sets of tyres during the race. This means, that in any condition teams need to make two pit-stops before finishing the race.

— Martin Brundle supported the FIA’s new rule requiring two pit stops at the Monaco Grand Prix but expressed concern over the lack of timing stipulations. Speaking to Sky F1, he said:
“I like the idea, it’s… pic.twitter.com/gfZ9aEArD7
The new rules have also given way to chaos. The Formula 1 fans and experts are wondering how effective this strategy is going to be. The two-stop rule is the first time F1 has introduced anything for Monaco. The teams can also change their tyres during a red flag and get away with it. The primary condition is that teams must use three different sets of tyres and two different tyre compounds.

Piastri was able to claim a podium in Monaco last year. He was furiously chasing down Charles Leclerc but could get past him due to lack of overtaking opportunities.
Piastri thinks that the new rules for Monaco are complicated. He still believes that the pole winner at Monaco has the best chance for winning the race.
“I think there is going to be a lot of gambling on safety cars, red flags, especially if you’re not a high points-paying position. There’s going to be a lot of risks taken, because ultimately if it goes wrong, you’re not losing anything.”
Oscar Piastri wary of two-stop rule causing complications 🥴

Oscar Piastri was also quick to point out the use of safety car window. He is sure that a safety car will come in handy for the teams during the race. Ultimately, Oscar Piastri’s statement carry weight. If the team does not manage to make a mess of their pitstop. They can easily get away with a slower tyre as long as they have the position.
The new rules are not exactly bound to make Monaco exciting but they can bring a bit more drama tot he race. Monaco GP is in danger due to the complications that have become a part of it. The race may soon get taken off the Formula 1 calendar due to lack of feasibility.
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
