The Monaco GP used to be an exciting race in the early era of Formula 1. The smaller and lighter cars found it easier to overtake in the narrow circuits of Monte Carlo. The race also focused heavily on qualifying performance. At Monaco, the grid position is determining factor for winning the race.

In the recent years, F1 cars have outgrown the track considerably. The narrow Monaco circuit has become far more dangerous and accident prone for Formula 1 racing. The emphasis on grid position also means lack racing action. This makes Monaco a rather boring race for the fans in the recent years.

Formula 1’s “Two Pit-stop Rule” for Monaco Explained

Formula 1 has been facing a lot of criticism for racing in Monaco GP. Fans do not like the prospect of nearly zero overtakes during the race on Sunday. There were also calls for removing the race from the F1 calendar.

The Monaco circuit cannot be expanded further. As such, Formula 1 has taken the decision to revise the format for the race instead of removing this legendary circuit. In the 2025 season, the Formula 1 organisation is experimenting with a new pit-stop rule for Monaco.

The two pit-stop rule for Monaco states that a driver must mandatorily complete two pit-stops before finishing the race. He also needs to utilise two different tyre compounds during the race. The failure of which will result in severe penalties including disqualification from the race.

Earlier, teams used to get away with a one-stop strategy while racing in Monaco. They used a safety car or red flag conditions to get their mandatory pit-stop complete. The new rules are expected to bring more action on track. Teams will have devise new strategy for the race this time.

A two pit-stop rule for Monaco also means that the teams can’t risk the penalty. Even if they win or claim a podium during the race, it will be null and void if they can’t follow the regulations and get disqualified.
