Has Israel Adesanya reached the end of his journey, or is there more to his story?
The UFC has seen its share of dominant champions fall from grace, but few descents have been as dramatic as Israel Adesanya’s. Just two years ago, ‘The Last Stylebender’ seemed unstoppable. He was a striking phenom who had cleaned out the middleweight division with a mixture of precision, flair, and an almost mystical ability to predict and counter his opponents’ every move.
His reign drew comparisons to Anderson Silva’s legendary run, and many believed he would surpass “The Spider’s” record for title defenses. But as the saying goes in combat sports, you’re often the last one to know when Father Time comes knocking!

The turning point came when Alex Pereira entered the UFC and brought his kickboxing rage with him. That loss was the first time Adesanya felt mortal in the UFC (Jan Blachowicz fight excluded!). Though he avenged that initial loss with a spectacular knockout of Pereira, it seemed to unlock something in the division. Suddenly, the once-untouchable champion looked human.

Sean Strickland’s upset victory over Israel Adesanya exposed holes in his game that nobody thought existed. This was a fight that everyone thought was just a stepping stone to greatness for Adesanya. However, Strickland shocked the world and claimed the middleweight title.
Early stoppage!

Izzy was still moving away from the shots.
Bounced right back up after the ref stopped it.
Ref should have given the former champ a few more chances there.
The follow-up loss to Dricus Du Plessis showed that those holes weren’t flukes. ‘Stillknocks’ became the first fighter to hand Israel Adesanya a submission loss. Now Nassourdine Imavov has delivered perhaps the most definitive statement yet. His TKO victory showed that the era of ‘The Last Stylebender’ may truly be reaching its last chapter.

Looking at the current middleweight landscape, it’s hard to find a favorable matchup for Israel Adesanya. Sean Strickland, who once seemed like an easy target for Izzy’s counter-striking, now holds the blueprint for neutralizing his style. Plus, he is set to rematch Dricus Du Plessis.
Khamzat Chimaev looms as an even more dangerous version of Du Plessis – a wrestler with knockout power who won’t give Adesanya the striking battle he craves. Then there’s Bo Nickal, the wrestling phenom who represents perhaps the worst stylistic matchup of all. Even rising stars like Brendan Allen and Roman Dolidze present unique challenges that the former champion hasn’t shown answers for lately.
The harsh reality of combat sports is that even the greatest fighters rarely get to write their own ending. Israel Adesanya still insists he has more to give, just as Anderson Silva did in his later years. He revealed in the post fight interview that he just needed to “relax for a bit and see what i want to do.”
But the similarities to Silva’s decline are becoming impossible to ignore. Both men were striking savants who seemed to lose their magical ability to dodge shots overnight. Four losses in five fights tell a story that no amount of self-belief can rewrite. While Israel Adesanya’s legacy as one of MMA’s most spectacular champions is secure, his future in the octagon looks increasingly uncertain!
