As the NFL season hits the one-month mark after Week 4, the playoff picture is already taking shape with a mix of the predictable and the unforeseen. Some teams have already charged ahead precisely as anticipated, with their star players delivering and changing moment and their defense clamping down with surgical precision. This has validated their offseason hype, keeping fans optimistic about a deep run.
Then there are teams that are hanging around the exact same spot they were in last season, solid but unremarkable, getting okay results with tough schedules to play through. While a handful of underdogs have stunned the league with explosive upsets.
And on the flip side, a few perennial contenders are stumbling early on, on trajectories that could sideline them from the playoffs completely, with multiple injuries, defensive/offensive lapses, or internal dramas. We are just going into Week 5 but today we present you with NFL teams’ playoff chances. Let’s get right into it.

The Buffalo Bills lead the pack with staggering odds at -20000 going into Week 5. They are some of the only undefeated teams in the NFL and so far no team has been able to figure them out. Reigning MVP Josh Allen is the focal point of the offense and he has led the Bills past the Ravens, Jets, Bills, and the Saints so far. The Bills are favored to be in the playoffs with their stellar play, but also their easier schedule than the rest. They play the Patriots in Week 5 and we expect them to be 5-0 to start their season.
The reigning defending champs, Philadelphia Eagles, have the second best odds to make the playoffs with -1500 and rightfully so. They are 4-0 to start their season, beating the Buccaneers, Rams, Chiefs, and the Cowboys, having no trouble going against tough teams. While the Eagles have had internal issues with receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith visibly frustrated with lack of touches, they are still winning ball games. The Eagles are ultimately still the team to beat with excellent offense and defense to start their season.
The L.A Chargers rank 3rd with odds listed at -500 and a 3-1 record to start their season. While they beat the Chiefs in Week 1, and then the Broncos and the Raiders, they came up short against the New York Giants, who just secured their first win of the season. While the Chargers look visibly better this season, their latest loss to the Giants makes us question their chances, despite really favorable odds.
While there are teams that are already playoff bound, there are also teams that have mightily struggled so far, and their playoff chances are starting to look extremely slim.
So here are some teams’ odds that may very well miss the playoffs entirely, according to FanDuel
| Teams | Odds |
|---|---|
| New Orleans Saints | -8000 |
| Tennessee Titans | -50000 |
| New York Giants | -8000 |
| New York Jets | -3000 |
| Carolina Panthers | -2200 |
| Las Vegas Raiders | -1300 |
| Miami Dolphins | -1250 |
| Cleveland Browns | -900 |
| Cincinnati Bengals | -700 |
| Dallas Cowboys | -550 |
The Tennessee Titans have the worst odds in this list and are very close already, to miss the playoffs. With odds listed at -50000, the Titans have yet to win a single game this season, with the Texans shutting them out in Week 4. And their rookie QB Cam Ward, has voiced his frustration and so far nothing has changed. The do not have a consistent offense, a bad O-line, and a defense that ranks 25th in the league. Something needs to change, if Ward and the group hopes to make the playoffs.
Similarly, the New Orleans Saints are on a similar boat. They have not won a game yet, losing to the Bills, Seahawks, 49ers, and the Cardinals. However, they have at least come close in some games, and are still figuring things out as the weeks progress. Spencer Rattler has struggled to find his mark as a starting QB, but the blame can also go to their O-line, who have not given their QB much time to breath. The Saints play the Patriots and the Bears next and they need to find a way to win, to turn their season around.
The New York Jets, despite getting a new head coach and a new quarterback, have not won a game yet. Starting their season 0-4, the Jets have mightily struggled and even though their QB Justin Field has had a decent start, that has not translated into wins. Their shaky defense, O-line, inconsistencies on the offensive end, may contributed to their losing streak, and it seems like the Jets’ losing woes, with or without Aaron Rodgers, will continue this season.
After winning their first game, the Raiders have looked terrible, even though they came close to beating the Chicago Bears in Week 4. They are on a three-game losing skid and their QB Geno Smith has struggled with 7 interceptions in four games, to start his season. Their rookie RB Ashton Jeanty has yet to find his strides, rushing for only 282 yards in four games.
While the Miami Dolphins’ chances may not look that bad on paper, we believe that they will miss the playoffs. The reason being Tyreek Hill’s knee injury which will sideline him for the rest of the season. While they won the last game against the Jets, they are 1-3 for the season, and have committed a lot of turnovers. It is highly unlikely that they make the playoffs, without Hill playing.
Some teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, 49ers, and the Seahawks, may make the playoffs, despite their records and here’s why.
The Chiefs started the season with a 0-2 record, losing to the Eagles, and the Chargers. However, they are now suddenly on a two-game winning streak beating the Ravens in Week 4 and the Giants in Week 3. Chiefs’ also welcomed back Xavier Worthy in their last game, and Rashee Rice will be eligible to play from Week 7. Once their roster comes back from suspensions or injuries, we believe that Mahomes will lead this group to the playoffs, despite their 2-2 record.
The Lions, after losing to the Packers in Week 1, are on track to get back to the playoffs. Jared Goff, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon Ra-St. Brown has played tremendously, and have not lost a beat, despite losing their coordinators. While defense is still a concern, we believe the Lions will be competing in the playoffs this season.
The 49ers are favored by a fairly easy schedule and despite their injuries, they have somehow won most of the games, going 3-1 for the season. The only question is, how far can they go in the playoffs, and will they be an early exit in the postseason?
Last but not the least are the Seattle Seahawks, who have looked comfortable with Sam Darnold leading the way. They are on a roll currently, winning 3 straight games and are currently 3-1 for the season. Their defense has been great, not allowing any team they’ve played so far to cross 20 points. While the offense has done their thing, scoring the ball and giving themselves the lead.
