John Cena to defend his title against his arch-rival Randy Orton.
John Cena was a legend even before he added the 17th WWE Championship title to his name. His heel turn was the highlight of 2025 till he defeated Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania to become the Last Real Champion. He has added his name to the WWE record book with the maximum number of Championship wins. John Cena announced that he would retire from WWE at the end of 2025.
John Cena has been vindictive towards the WWE Universe and vowed to ruin wrestling for everyone. He was acknowledging the crowd for the first time after his WrestleMania victory, when his promo ended with an RKO. This revived the 25-year-long rivalry, which changed the course of WWE in its entirety. Randy Orton and John Cena met again and had a word war before John Cena attempted a cheap shot but received another RKO instead.
John Cena will defend his title for the first time since he won it at WrestleMania 41, and his opponent is his arch-rival, Randy Orton. Randy Orton tried to talk some sense into John Cena, but it didn’t work as they soon started to verbally assault each other. John Cena gave Randy Orton a title opportunity at WWE Backlash 2025 in front of his home crowd.
Randy has won 14 WWE Championships and is after his 15th title. These two have locked horns numerous times before, and John Cena always had the upper hand over the Viper. The roles, however, have been reversed for the first time in WWE history with John Cena being the heel. Randy Orton is, however, known as the Legend Killer for a reason. He has introduced numerous legends to the three most dangerous letters in WWE history, RKO.
If speculations are to be believed, we would see Randy Orton winning the match at 2025 Backlash, but via disqualification. Since DQ victories don’t switch titles in WWE, there are high chances that John Cena will choose the easy way out of the match like he did at WrestleMania 41. He can either deliver a low blow or hit Randy with his championship belt to give Randy Orton the victory, but retain the title.
John Cena might also receive help from his allies in WWE, like Travis Scott and Kevin Owens. The wildest and most likely speculation of all is that Paul Heyman, along with Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker, will help John to retain his title at Backlash. Seth Rollins has previously dropped subtle hints of joining Cena on numerous occasions, from helping him win the Elimination Chamber to using his “Best for Business” line.
Randy Orton winning the match but not the title will set up John Cena vs. Randy Orton perfectly for future events. Seth Rollins might help John Cena but betray him later in the future, making the latter leave his heel persona and become a face again before his retirement.
