Gunther to fight an Underdog Pat McAfee at Backlash.
Things have not been good for Gunther in WWE for the past few weeks. He lost his WWE Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso via submission at WrestleMania. To make things worse, he has been criticised all across the globe and mocked for tapping out to his own move at WrestleMania. All these things were enough for Gunther to cross the boundaries that are seldom crossed in WWE.
Gunther confronted Michael Cole and asked him to criticize him on his face. Michael Cole retaliated with the sentence that only increased the agony of the Ring General. He stated, “I am not the one who tapped out.” Gunther didn’t hold back after this and pushed Pat McAfee and locked Michael Cole in the sleeper hold. Pat McAfee ran to the aid of his commentary partner, but was locked in the sleeper hold till he was about to faint.
Gunther was fined a hefty amount and suspended indefinitely for attacking Pat McAfee and Michael Cole. Adam Pearce announced the fine, but Pat McAfee wanted to get his revenge on his own. He called Nick Aldis, who was the stand-in General Manager of Raw in Adam Pearce’s absence, and asked him to unsuspend Gunther. He asked Nick Aldis to give him a match against Gunther.

Nick Aldis gave Pat McAfee a match against Gunther at Backlash. Michael Cole asked Pat McAfee to think again, as he is not a professional wrestler. Pat McAfee informed the WWE Universe that he always wanted to be a professional wrestler, and he never stepped away from a fight. He always fights for his people.
There is no doubt that Pat McAfee is no match for Gunther. The Ring General is known for his sheer dominance in his matches, and the loss at WrestleMania might have made him more dangerous. It would be a surprise if Pat McAfee has a few brief moments of dominance in his match at Backlash 2025. Gunther should dominate the match and easily win it.
Gunther, however, will get his hands on Pat McAfee in an official match, and he would do everything to show his dominance. He could launch a vicious attack on McAfee after the match, setting the perfect stage for Goldberg to make a dramatic entrance and rescue him. Goldberg could then get his hands on him. He has had a dispute with Goldberg, where he insulted the latter’s fatherhood in front of his family at Badblood 2024.
Goldberg’s appearance would set up his rivalry against Gunther and give him the retirement match he had long been yearning for. He has previously announced he would return to WWE for his retirement match.
