Who Was Guo Jiaxuan? The Former Bayern Munich Footballer Who Tragically Passed Away a Day Before His 19th Birthday

Abhinav Goel

Injuries and moments of sheer misfortune remind us that football can be cruel and unpredictable at times.

Football is often referred to as the beautiful game, a sport that unites people across the world and brings moments of pure joy and inspiration. From last-minute winners to underdog stories, the game has provided countless fairytales where players achieve immortality on the pitch. Yet, for all its magic, football also carries an unforgiving and unpredictable side, where dreams can be shattered in an instant. Injuries and moments of sheer misfortune remind us that football, like life, can be cruel and unpredictable.

One heartbreaking example of football’s unpredictable and cruel nature is the tragic story of Guo Jiaxuan. A young and talented footballer with a promising future ahead of him, Guo was on the path to achieving his dreams, representing his country at youth level and training with some of the best academies in the world. However, in a cruel twist of fate, his journey was cut short due to an unfortunate on-field incident. His story is a painful yet important reminder that while football can provide moments of immense joy, it can also deliver heart-wrenching tragedies.

Who Was Guo Jiaxuan?

Guo Jiaxuan was a promising Chinese footballer whose fledgling career was tragically cut short following a severe head injury sustained during a training match. Born in Beijing, China, Guo began his football journey at a young age, joining the youth academy of Beijing Guoan at 13. His talent and dedication quickly propelled him through the ranks, leading to him representing China’s under-17 national team. In 2023, Guo’s potential was recognized internationally when he became part of the FC Bayern World Squad, an initiative by the German club to nurture young talents from across the globe.

On February 6, 2025, during a training match in Madrid, Spain, Guo suffered a catastrophic injury. An accidental collision with an opponent resulted in a knee strike to his head, causing a subarachnoid hemorrhage—a severe form of brain bleeding. He was immediately transported to a Madrid hospital, where doctors determined he had no remaining brain function.

Guo plunged into a coma and received care at a local hospital where his family learned that he lacked any brain function. His condition worsened, leading to a transfer to a Beijing hospital, where he died one day shy of his 19th birthday.

A Bayern statement released on Thursday said, “FC Bayern is mourning the passing of Guo Jiaxuan, the former World Squad player who has died at the age of 18 in his native China.”

“He succumbed to the effects of a serious head injury following a tragic accident during a training match in Spain on 6 February.”

“The club will continue to do its utmost to deal with the consequences appropriately and provide all necessary help and support to Guo Jiaxuan’s family.”

Guo Jiaxuan’s brother shared a heartfelt tribute on the Chinese social media platform RedNote, posting a black-and-white photo of the young defender. Accompanying the image was a deeply emotional caption, which read: “He will forever remain frozen in time on the last day of his 18th year.”

Guo’s untimely passing has left a void not only in his family’s hearts but also within the footballing community, where he was seen as a rising star with a bright future ahead.
