Behind every great fighter stands someone who believed in them from the beginning. Parents play crucial roles in shaping athletic careers through sacrifice and unwavering support. But some fathers take that commitment to extraordinary levels that change everything. And Tom Aspinall’s father is a prime example of that.
Aspinall (15-3) has steamrolled through the UFC heavyweight division with devastating knockout power. The British champion holds the shortest average fight time in promotional history at just over two minutes. His rise to undisputed champion status didn’t happen by accident or pure talent alone. One man sacrificed his entire career to make Tom’s championship dreams become reality. Andy Aspinall saw potential in his young son that nobody else could see yet.
Tom Aspinall was born on April 11, 1993, to Andy and Tracey Aspinall in Atherton, Greater Manchester, England. His early years were shaped by his father’s unwavering belief in his potential. Andy Aspinall is far more than just the father of the current UFC heavyweight champion, he’s the architect behind his son’s entire fighting career. Andy worked as a successful IT contractor making excellent money for years. He later became an IT manager with job security and steady income to support his family.
Most fathers would stay in that comfortable position and encourage their kids’ hobbies on weekends. But Andy saw something special in young Tom that demanded more than casual support. At just twelve years old, Tom showed exceptional talent in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that caught his father’s attention. The problem was simple: not many BJJ schools existed in their area at the time.
Andy made an absolutely wild decision that changed everything for the Aspinall family forever. He accepted a redundancy payment from his IT job that he didn’t have to take. Then he used that money to open his own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school for Tom.
Tom Aspinall’s father says he wouldn’t have allowed Tom to pursue MMA if he wasn’t good enough 🫡👊

Opening that BJJ gym gave Tom a solid foundation in grappling fundamentals from a young age. Andy personally knew Tom would be good enough to justify the massive career change. He watched his son’s development closely to ensure fighting was truly the right path. Tom’s natural abilities and fight IQ proved his father’s instincts were absolutely correct.
Tom’s MMA journey actually started at just eight years old in a gym built in their family’s backyard garage under the coaching of his father. That modest space laid the foundation for his early training in wrestling and boxing fundamentals. By sixteen, Tom discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at his father’s gym and found his true calling. A sudden growth spurt brought physical challenges that required adjusting his entire training approach. At twenty years old, Tom faced another hurdle: his massive size made finding suitable sparring partners nearly impossible.
Andy was friends with Peter Fury, the legendary boxing trainer who coached Tyson Fury himself. He arranged for Tom to train at the Fury gym to develop his striking skills. That connection proved invaluable in rounding out his skill set perfectly. Tom combined his already formidable BJJ background from Andy’s gym with elite boxing expertise.
Andy Aspinall serves as more than just Tom’s father and biggest supporter throughout his career. He remains a constant presence in Tom’s corner for every single fight inside the octagon. Since before his UFC debut, Andy was there as his coach in his corner. When Jon Jones vacated the heavyweight title after holding it for over 800 days, Andy was there. Throughout the challenging wait for a unification bout that never materialized, Andy supported his son.
