Despite their dominance in European football, neither team has yet triumphed in the Nations League.
Two European football powerhouses go head-to-head on Thursday evening as Italy host Germany in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final clash. With Italy hosting the first leg at the iconic San Siro Stadium in Milan, the home side will be looking to capitalize on their home advantage.
Despite their dominance in European football, neither team has yet triumphed in the Nations League. Italy have come close, finishing third in the last two editions, while Germany have yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals. With a chance to rewrite history, both nations will be highly motivated to secure an advantage ahead of the return leg.
Luciano Spalletti’s Italy are in a transitional phase following an underwhelming Euro 2024 campaign, where they failed to meet expectations. Since then, Spalletti has focused on rebuilding trust among Italian supporters by implementing a more disciplined and organized approach. The Azzurri were impressive in the Nations League group stage, narrowly missing out on first place to France, despite a string of impressive performances.
Meanwhile, Germany have been one of the most dominant sides in the competition, finishing top of their group with an unbeaten record—winning four matches and drawing two. Germany accumulated 14 points, scoring a tournament-high 18 goals while conceding only four.
Iconic players, iconic moments. Germany vs. Italy is back here again. 🇩🇪🇮🇹

For Germany, the most notable absence is Manuel Neuer as the legendary goalkeeper officially retired from international football earlier this year. His long-time understudy, Marc-André ter Stegen, was expected to take over in goal but he has also been ruled out due to injury. This leaves Germany without their two most experienced goalkeepers, forcing manager Julian Nagelsmann to rely on Alexander Nübel.

In the attacking department, both Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz are sidelined due to injuries. Wirtz, one of Germany’s most exciting creative talents, has been in sensational form for Bayer Leverkusen this season. Meanwhile, Italy will also have to cope without some key players. Federico Dimarco has been ruled out after pulling a muscle earlier this month. The Inter Milan full-back has been an important part of Luciano Spalletti’s setup, providing both defensive stability and attacking width.
Italy will also have to do without in-form Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui after the 25-year-old was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a muscle strain in his thigh.
Italy predicted lineup: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Buongiorno, Bastoni; Cambiaso, Frattesi, Tonali, Rovella Udogie; Barella; Kean.
Germany predicted lineup: Nubel; Kimmich, Tah, Rudiger, Mittelstadt; Andrich, Gross; Sane, Musiala, Adeyemi; Kleindienst.
