When Jean-Philippe Mateta earned his first France cap earlier this month. And the Crystal Palace striker hoped to celebrate a long-awaited personal milestone. Instead, his proudest week unexpectedly stirred a public dispute involving one of the club’s biggest former stars, Wilfried Zaha.
In an interview with L’Equipe, Mateta reflected on his early Palace days. He admitted that not everyone believed he could reach international level. He recalled that some teammates laughed when he spoke about representing France. He named Zaha to be among them. Mateta said:
“At Crystal Palace, right at the start, when I wasn’t even playing, I spoke about the France team in the dressing room and I had team-mates like Wilfried Zaha who were laughing. They said that I was mad to think about the France team when I wasn’t even playing.” The Frenchman, however, stressed that his ambition never wavered.

The remarks didn’t sit well with Zaha, who is currently on loan at Charlotte FC from Galatasaray. The 32-year-old quickly responded in a passionate video on social media. He described his frustration over what he believed was a mischaracterisation. Zaha, who spent more than a decade as Palace’s talisman, said:
“My head’s on fire. I’ve got to clear up this Mateta situation. Everyone knows me. I’ve never tried to make anyone feel small or tell someone they can’t make it. It’s disgusting when I see someone that I thought was a friend do that.” Zaha emphasised that he would never discourage a teammate chasing their dream.

Following the online storm, Mateta sought to end the speculation. He confirmed that he and Zaha had spoken privately. Mateta clarified before Palace’s Conference League fixture against AEK Larnaca saying, “I spoke with him. Everything is good. We talked in private, and that’s it.”

Reports suggest that both men agreed the situation was a misunderstanding that spiralled under media attention. The public exchange briefly overshadowed his France breakthrough. Even so, Mateta has continued to impress domestically. The striker netted a hat-trick against Bournemouth and remains central to Palace’s European push.
He has also spoken of his determination to stay focused on the season ahead rather than revisiting old tensions. For Zaha and Mateta, the fallout seems to have passed. What began as an off-hand locker-room story evolved into an online frenzy. However, both players appear content to leave it behind.
