When it comes to MMA predictions, Chael Sonnen has always been a mix of showman and sage. The former UFC title challenger has made quite a name for himself in retirement, offering spicy takes and bold predictions about the sport he once competed in.

However, his latest forecast about Jon Jones might be more than just his usual attention-grabbing commentary. During a recent episode of the “Good Guy/Bad Guy Show” with Daniel Cormier, Sonnen dropped what he calls his “boldest prediction of 2025“. He revealed that Jon Jones will hang up his gloves after fighting Tom Aspinall, win or lose. And he might be onto something this time.

Chael Sonnen’s Logic For This Prediction

The part of this prediction that makes it more believable is how it lines up with Jones’s recent behavior. The current heavyweight champ has been dropping hints about retirement like breadcrumbs, even though he initially suggested he would retire after beating Stipe Miocic at UFC 309.

Instead of riding off into the sunset, Jon Jones started floating around the idea of fighting Alex Pereira and even opened up to an Aspinall matchup for the right price, of course. But there’s something different about the Aspinall situation. For the first time in forever, Jones is actually the betting underdog (+107). That’s right; the bookmakers expect the man who’s dominated the sport for over a decade to lose. Here is what Chael Sonnen said:

“If you wanted my boldest prediction of 2025, I’m actually very confident in the prediction and that is that Jon Jones retires. I will tell you that Jon Jones is gonna fight Tom Aspinall. I will tell you Jon’s gonna do a lot better with Tom than some people are giving him credit for, but that’s tomorrow’s discussion. When that fight is done, win or lose, I do believe it will be Jon’s final appearance.”

Daniel Cormier, who knows a thing or two about Jones from their own fierce rivalry, agrees with Chael Sonnen’s take. He pointed out how fighters often start laying the groundwork for retirement well before they actually call it quits.

Plus, if Jon Jones manages to beat Aspinall, a younger, hungry champion who’s been steamrolling through the heavyweight division, what better way to cement his legacy as the GOAT? And if he loses?
