Colby Covington expects an exciting fight against a former middleweight champion, with plenty of twists and turns!
The UFC welterweight division hasn’t been kind to Colby Covington lately. After his latest setback against Joaquin Buckley ended with a nasty cut and a TKO loss, fans would think he might take some time to regroup. But nope. ‘Chaos’ has got different plans, and they involve picking fights a whole weight class up.
The rivalry between him and former middleweight champion Sean Strickland is well known. ‘Tarzan’ has left no opportunity to trash-talk Covington and his personality. Now, the former title contender is snapping back.

Speaking on Submission Radio, Covington floated the idea of moving up to middleweight, specifically calling out Sean Strickland. He basically called Sean a glorified cardio kickboxer with just two moves in his arsenal: a jab and a front kick. Coming from a guy who’s made his career on cardio and pressure, that’s pretty rich.
“He’s [Strickland] got a jab, he’s got a front kick. But besides that, you shut those weapons down, and he’s very limited. So, you know, he’s a cardio fighter. He’s just a cardio kickboxer, essentially. I don’t see any threats out of Sean Strickland. And it’s an entertaining fight that I might entertain in the future.”
Now, this isn’t just random tough talk. Colby Covington has actually done his homework here. He pointed out how other welterweights like Robert Whittaker found success moving up to 185. Sometimes, a change of weight class is exactly what a fighter needs.
What makes this potential matchup interesting is the style clash. Sean Strickland’s straightforward boxing-heavy approach versus Colby Covington’s wrestling-based pressure game could make for some fascinating exchanges.
However, moving up in weight is no joke, though. It is one thing to talk about how slow middleweight fighters are, but it’s another to actually stand in there with guys who are naturally 15-20 pounds heavier than you’re used to.
Colby Covington’s wrestling might give him an edge, but those extra pounds make a big difference when you’re trying to control someone on the ground.
