Scott Turner: From NFL to HUD Secretary under Trump
President-elect Trump has chosen Scott Turner, a former NFL player, as the next secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Turner, currently the chair of the Center for Education Opportunity, previously held the position of executive director at the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC).
“Scott is an NFL Veteran, who, during my First Term, served as the First Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities,” Trump said in a statement on Friday.
Turner’s football journey began at Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. He continued playing as a starting cornerback at the University of Illinois, where he earned a degree in speech communications.
In 1995, Turner entered the NFL Draft and was picked by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round. Over his career, which spanned from 1995 to 2004, he played for the Redskins, the San Diego Chargers, and the Denver Broncos.
Notably, he was the last player to wear #21 for the Chargers before Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson claimed the number.
Turner appeared in 101 NFL games, racking up 96 solo tackles, five interceptions, and two sacks.
As his playing career neared its end, Turner developed a strong interest in politics. During the NFL offseasons, he interned with Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter. Furthermore, after retiring from professional football in 2004, Turner transitioned fully into a political career.
