Trey Hendrickson Contract Updates- Bengals and Hendrickson Resume High-Stakes Talks

Eric D

The Cincinnati Bengals, fresh off a 9-8 season in 2024, are at a pivotal moment as they negotiate with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson. The 30-year-old, fresh off a First-Team All-Pro season with an NFL leading 17.5 sacks, has been outspoken about securing a long-term extension, creating tension after a stalled offseason. His absence from team activities underscored the urgency of retaining one of the league’s elite pass rushers for a Bengals team aiming to return to playoff contention next season.

Hendrickson’s contract dispute is marked by public frustration over poor communication has been the story of the Bengals as of recent. With the team currently freeing up over $27 million in cap space by cutting linebacker Germaine Pratt, the Bengals are now in a better position to address Hendrickson’s demands. His 43 sacks over the past three seasons, just one behind Myles Garrett’s league leading total, highlights his value to a defense ranked 25th in 2024. As training camp approaches and the new season is just some months away, resolving this situation is critical for Cincinnati’s aspirations in the competitive AFC.

Renewed Talks Spark Hope

As per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bengals and Hendrickson have resumed contract talks, offering optimism after months of silence. Hendrickson, set to earn $16 million in his contract’s final year, seeks a deal that is comparable to top pass rushers like Myles Garrett ($40 million annually) or Max Crosby ($35 million). His absence from offseason workouts, including mandatory minicamp, led to $105K in fines, clearly doubling down on his firm stance. “When there is a lack of communication in any relationship… it leads to animosity,” Hendrickson said on May, voicing his frustration.

Bengals QB Joe Burrow called the holdout a distraction but went on to express support, saying, “We’re all supporting Trey and would love to have him back.” Coach Zac Taylor emphasized the value of retaining great players. With rookie Shemar Stewart also unsigned, the Bengals face multiple contract challenges. However, the Bengals recent $161 million extension for Ja’Marr Chase shows their commitment to their core talent, making Hendrickson’s deal a priority to bolster their defense which is already bad, for a 2025 playoff push.
